Just when you have got to grips with your new baby, and you are just becoming familiar with how parenting all works, along comes teething to throw a spanner in the works.
Between the ages of three to nine month you baby’s teeth will begin to break through the gum. Those of you who are battling with problem wisdom teeth will appreciate just how painful the process can be.
Teething symptoms can include sore and swollen gums, red cheeks, disrupted sleep patterns, slightly higher temperature, increase in nappy rash, and some babies seem to get colds.
Ways of dealing with teething pains. We asked Bristol parents on the streets:
Emma from Mangotsfield: “I crushed up ice in a muslin cloth for Maisey to suck and chew on”.
Helen from Bishopston: “Olivia has a teething ring that goes in a freezer and comes out when needed. It’s always ready”.
Anna from Bedminster: “I used to make little ice lollies with real orange juice and Bailey loved them, and he got one of his five-a-day”.
Marie from Eastville: “I used to get these little sachets of natural powder to rub on Libby’s gums”.
Mike from Southville: “Rory liked to chew on pieces of cold carrot or cucumber”.
Usually by the age of six, milk teeth are becoming replaced by a set of 32 full adult teeth. It may be a painful process, but not as bad as the Long Snouted Spinner Dolphin, which has 252 teeth, all of which come through when it is just a few weeks old.

Sharks shed their teeth every two weeks! But their teeth fall out from the front and are replaced from the back in a conveyor belt motion.
Marie from Eastville, successfully tried Nelson’s Teetha on her little girl Libby’s gums. It is a natural homeopathic remedy designed to soothe and calm the symptoms of teething. It comes in a granule form with natural Chamomilla, and dissolves in the baby’s mouth easing the pain.
Marie said: “I tried other chemical based formulas on my baby’s teeth to begin with, but wasn’t a fan as it just slid off of Libby’s gums. My health visitor told me to look out for the powder granules as they don’t slide off and are chemical free. Since making the switch I have found them to be more effective and I have even used it on my own toothache at times”.
Nelsons Teetha costs £4.80 for 24 sachets and is available from Boots, Holland and Barrett, Lloyds pharmacies
