Mums lacking confidence to return to workplace

Striking a balance between fulfilling career and stay-at-home mother continues to be an internal battle for mothers across the UK.

Whilst seven out of ten mothers are saying affordable childcare is a major barrier for not returning to work, secretly, dwindling confidence in themselves is also keeping 62 per cent of mothers away from the workplace.

Despite this, 48 per cent of mothers are still envious when hearing the success stories of other mothers with children who have managed to set up in business.

Mother of two and successful business women Robin Bradley does have words of hope for the mothers who are itching to make a go of business for themselves, even the 74 per cent who would do so if they had someone to guide them through it step-by-step.

Robin set up her own company, Phoenix Trading, 15 years ago. She says: “Setting up Phoenix Trading allowed me to spend as much time with my children as I wanted, allowing me to generate an income, have flexible hours and have all the perks of a working life.  Setting up your own business can seem daunting, which is why we provide lots of support for those who want to set themselves up as Independent Phoenix Traders, but aren’t sure how to go about it. I hope that they can find the work/life balance that every mother aspires to discover!”

Phoenix Trading had its own humble beginnings back in 1994, when three mums decided to buy wholesale greetings cards from a local publisher.

From working part-time for a year selling cards direct to friends, families and school events, they now have 9,000 Phoenix Traders across the UK.
