Reporting Hate Crime Bristol
What is a hate crime?
Would you know what to do if you saw a hate crime taking place? Would you even recognise one happening?
A hate crime is a criminal offence which happens on differing levels but is ‘perceived’ by the victim or anyone witnessing it to be motivated by a prejudice based on race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, transgender identity or gender.
Assaults, vandalism, verbal abuse, cyberbullying or even threats of an attack are some of the ways that hate crimes manifest.
Avon and Somerset police say that targeting people based on physical or learning disability skin colour, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, mental health difficulties, nationality, religion and gender are hate crime targets.
Residents in Bristol are being urged to report hate crimes when they see them to which will also better help police improve services for victims in communities that need them.
People are warned to contact the police on 999 in an emergency or 101 in a non-emergency. Hate crimes can also be reported online at True Vision: http://www.report-it.org.uk/home
