Special Recognition Award for Andrew Lloyd Webber at Classic BRIT Awards 2018

Musical Theatre News: He’s had some hits. And some misses. But amongst the melodrama and showstoppers, Andrew Lloyd Webber has succeeded in bringing accessible theatre to audiences of all ages.

For his life’s work, he’s being awarded a Special Recognition Award for Musical Theatre & Education at the Classic BRIT Awards 2018.

The event which takes place on 13 June at The Royal Albert Hall, will include a performance by Meghan Picerno, the current Christine in the tour of Phantom follow up Love Never Dies.

The composer, who recently celebrated his 70th birthday, remains at the forefront of British theatre.

Behind the scenes, he speaks out against funding cuts to music education and has ploughed over £19m into supporting emerging artists and supporting music education across the UK. His foundation has also awarded £2.4m to the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, which has given access to free classical music instruments and tuition to more than 6500 children in London.

“Now that I am 70 I look back and think how lucky I have been,” Andrew Lloyd Webber says. “You are very lucky if you know what you want to do in life. I am doubly lucky that I not only have made a living out of my passion but a hugely rewarding one. I hope through my Foundation that I am able to give something back to the profession that has been so good to me. I am a passionate believer in the importance of the arts in schools, particularly music, which transcends all languages, shades of politics, race and creeds. In our increasingly dangerous and fractured world, the arts have never been as vital as they are today and they should be free.”
