Shoppers using the Ikea car park at the Eastgate Retail Centre are being urged to remove valuables from the vehicles.
According to crime statistics, there has been 55 theft from van offences recorded since April 2017. The most recent incident occured on Saturday 03 February when £4000 worth of tools were stolen from a van using the car park.
“We’ve been working closely with security at the store to try and increase the number of patrols and have made further recommendations, including cutting back bushes to improve visibility and putting out crime prevention or warning posters,” PSCO Charlotte Thompson said.
“We’re advising van owners to security mark all their tools and ideally, remove valuables from their vans when they’re left unattended. If you’re using this car-park, try and park in a well-lit area and if you have a rear-access only van, park up against a wall to make it harder for opportunist thieves. If not, then we suggest someone stays with the van.
“If you see anything suspicious activity in this car-park, or have any information about these thefts, please call 101 and give the call handler the reference number for the latest incident which is 5218025574.”
