Awful Auntie, the best-selling children’s book by David Walliams, has been turned into a stage show by The Birmingham Stage Company. It is currently visiting theatres across the country as part of a UK tour and will be calling into Bristol during May this year.
The show tells the story of Stella, who has no idea her life is in danger when she sets off to visit London with her parents. Waking up from a coma three months later, only her Aunt Alberta can tell Stella what has happened. But, not everything Aunt Alberta tells her turns out to be true and Stella quickly discovers she’s in for the fight of her life against her very own awful Auntie.
The Birmingham Stage Company knows how to turn great books into entertaining stage shows. It’s their 25th anniversary this year and they are no stranger to David Walliams stories. They have already put his Gansta Granny on stage and are famed for the 12 years they’ve spent producing all the Horrible History shows.
“The Birmingham Stage Company’s Gangsta Granny is truly brilliant, so I’m hugely excited that they’re now bringing Awful Auntie to the stage,” David Walliams said. “It promises to be a thrilling show and a total hoot – Wagnar the owl and I can’t wait to see it!”
David’s Awful Auntie book was published in September 2014, going straight to number 1 in the children’s book charts and remained there for seven weeks. Its popularity soared further after the paperback was released bringing sales to over 16.7 million copies worldwide.
The stage show will be at The Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 01 – Sunday 06 May 2018.
