Games consoles and TV stop young children getting to sleep

Video games, mobile phones and TV are responsible for children as young as six not going to bed until late into the evening.

According to findings by Travelodge in a sleep study of more than 2,000 children, the average six year old doesn’t go to bed until 9.33pm.

It doesn’t get any earlier for older children, with eight year olds going to bed at 9.49, ten year olds at 10.06 and twelve year olds 11.17pm.

Children living in Birmingham were found to get the least amount of sleep at 7.28 hours, compared to children in Oxford getting 11.22 hours.

An 88 per cent of teachers involved in the research felt that distractions in the bedroom such as TVs and games consoles were the root cause of the problem.
