St Nicks gets £150,000 make over
One of Bristol’s cultural shopping hotspots will be getting a makeover before Christmas.
The popular St Nicholas Market will be getting £150,000 of work carried out over the next ten weeks with the market remaining open throughout.
The scaffolding went up today on what is its 266th anniversary.
Cleaning, washing and repairs to the stonework will be carried out along with a general tidy up.
The famous clock face with its two minute hands will also be cleaned.
Work is also planned to upgrade the Covered Market by redecorating the interior and work on the roof.
Bristol’s executive member for efficiency and value for money, Councillor Popham said: “St Nicholas Market is a real historical treasure, and as responsible landlords, it is our duty to ensure it is maintained and cared for present and future generations to enjoy. Once the works are completed, the Exchange will be stunning.
“Our investment is a clear demonstration of the council’s commitment to St Nicholas Market and its continued growth and development as a thriving business community in the heart of the city.”
