The health benefits are undeniable. It is also a cheaper alternative to formula and you don’t have to sterilise or warm up breasts to do it.

Much literature is dedicated to latching on, off, positioning and posture. But, there are other practical issues for the newly breastfeeding mother to take into consideration.

Having learned through personal experience, mother of two and Chopsy Baby reporter Deborah Adams, shares some tips.

Deborah says: “I have put together these tips, most of which I haven’t spotted in other books. Some things you only learn through practical experience and the whispered tones from other breastfeeding mothers. Don’t forget, also read the bog-standard advice leaflets of which you will receive many.”

Get a steriliser, bottles a breast pump and bibs
When I was a first time mum, I didn’t even realise that this stuff existed before I had the baby. I was brain washed into purely breastfeeding so didn’t even feel the need to research any of this.

I had my first baby during the Easter weekend. By the evening of Easter Monday and due to having not slept for more than 40 hours because of a screaming baby, I finally sent the other half off to get some formula. He drove mile after mile to find a shop open.

When he finally returned, all he could get was stage three milk. Over the course of the night, I gradually bottle-fed this to the baby. It wasn’t right, it wasn’t advised, but the baby coped and was fine.

When it came to the second child, I managed to pick up a wonderful vomiting bug that left me so dehydrated I could not feed. But, I was already prepared with the bottle-feeding basics lurking in the back of the cupboard.

Before you give birth, make sure you get a few cartons of formula and a bottle into the house. You don’t have to use them. They can just be there in case of an emergency. Childbirth is unpredictable and should there be any lengthy hospital stays for the mother, it will help anyone else looking after the baby alone to cope. But, keep bottles out of sight so you don’t cave in too easily.

Bibs are also really useful, even in the early days. They can stop milk dribbling down the baby’s neck causing skin soreness.

I found that although slightly more expensive, the Tommee Tippee Milk Feeding Bibs with their thick edges were the best.

www.tommeetippee.co.uk/product/milk_feeding_bib_0_months_/

Get Lansinoh
For a first time mum, this may look a little pricey on inspection – around £10 a tube. This can make or break breastfeeding. Pack it into your hospital bag and use it straight away, don’t wait for soreness to start first.

As soon as you have had the baby get into the habit of putting it on after every feed. Don’t get to the point where you have a problem before you start using it. It will be expensive but it is essential.

www.lansinoh.co.uk

Realise that breastfeeding is time consuming
Breastfeeding can take a lot of time out of your day. If you realise this from the start you will be prepared. After a few weeks of feeding, you will be able to get to the point where you can walk around and complete simple tasks – make a cold drink, turn the TV on with your toes, open the door to the postman. Though do use common sense to make sure you are not going to do anything dangerous.

Feeding can take up to half an hour depending on the baby. At different stages they might be demanding milk every few hours. If you do the maths that’s a lot of feeding time. Get a good book to read and if you can, always have a drink near by.

Drink plenty of fluids – water and juice
This one is very obvious but every mother will have one day where it takes them a while to work out why they have a ranging headache. It is likely you have not drunk enough and are dehydrated.

Take some vitamin tablets. Babies will strip all the vitamins and minerals from you. The NHS can give out ones during pregnancy.

Get a feeding cushion
I put this off for my first child. This resulted in suffering from really uncomfortable sleeping at night during pregnancy. Feeding a baby can also be awkward and give you back pain if you have nothing to support their weight. I cannot recommend feeding cushions enough. It’s a must. A lovely big cushion will be an investment during pregnancy, especially for women with SPD. It can be used afterwards for breastfeeding or to sit on if you have had an episiotomy. They are also really useful for when babies start to sit up. Placing one of these behind the baby will give them a nice safe area to fall onto should they suddenly lurch sideways.

Protection
Although breast pads are great realise now that they don’t work at night. They will leak. Shove large pieces of fabric in your bra then you will not wake up in a milky mess.

Buy a mattress protector to protect the bed. I found one from Boots that was great. It’s washable and will also come in handy when you child grows up and starts potty training. Only use it when your baby is feeding and you are awake. Refer to all safety instructions.

www.brollysheets.co.uk – a brilliant buy. Works, washes well, good quality, made to last, looks good and can be moved around the house as necessary.

www.boots.com/en/Assurasleep-Soft-Cotton-Waterproof-Mattress-Protector-Cot-Bed_121088

Positions
Learn different positions of breast feeding. A great one is lying down. If you are really tired lie down on your side and feed. This is great for those new mums with a painful posterior. Only do this if you have someone else around to make sure you do not fall asleep next to the baby.

One mother in the maternity ward could only feed her newborn baby if he was in a sitting up position.

Don’t be afraid to feed in public. You will get it down to such an art that people talking to you think you are just cuddling the baby. Don’t be bullied into feeding in toilets, would you eat your dinner in one? Many shops and shopping centres provide nice feeding rooms if you want total privacy. Boots usually have a good space and Cabot Circus shopping centre have lovely family rooms.

There will always be stories in the media about breastfeeding mothers being booted out of places for feeding their child. The truth is, few mothers will want people around them to know they have got a breast – discreetly and usually covered – out. Those mothers who like to brag that they planned their days so that they never left the house during a baby’s feeding time are either lying, having boring lives, had the luxury of ordering someone else out of the house to do their chores or didn’t feed on demand.

Timing
Limit the feeding time if you have a baby that just wants to feed all the time. In the first few days some babies want to feed 24/7. I would just let my first child feed and feed. Second time around, I was given advice that you are not a snack bar. Give them a good feed but don’t let it go on for longer than 45 minutes. Stop at this limit or you could fall into the trap of have sore nipples from a child constantly being attached to you. Feeding then turns into an exhausting misery leaving you chained to the sofa. You will not be depriving your child you are just being sensible. Always talk to a health visitor if you are concerned. I found with this method that the baby would cry for around ten seconds and then realise that this was the pattern and fall asleep.

Milk changes
On the third night of some very successful feeding, my second child became restless all night. My partner was convinced that the baby was not getting enough milk. I was not so convinced because the baby kept throwing up milk.

My very helpful partner kept offering to make up bottles but my instinct told me this would not help. I was subsequently told at the baby clinic that the third day is when the milk changes from being the thick yellowy milk to the bulky white milk. The grouchiness from the baby was them adjusting to the difference. Another change in their feeding pattern comes at around ten days when they suddenly have a growth spurt.

If you are going to do some breastfeeding and some bottle feeding – mixed feeding – you need to express the feed that the baby would have taken. If you don’t, your body will think that your baby doesn’t need so much milk and so produce less.

Treat yourself
Feeding a baby is a challenge whether by breast or formula. Breastfeeders shouldn’t become brainwashed into the belief that bottle-feeding mothers are terrible. Looking after a baby is hard and there are so many reasons why people need to bottle feed.

But, there is no harm in rewarding yourself for your success. Work out how much you can save each week by breastfeeding – a box of powdered formula retails between eight and nine pounds for most brands. Pop that money in a box and buy yourself a treat.

Breastfeeding is continually pumped through parent propaganda as the best way to feed your baby.
