Make sure you are getting safe, quality teaching<\/em><\/p>\n

The popularity of ballet class as a spare-time activity never seems to dwindle amongst parents. Though predominantly favoured by the mothers of girls, boys also benefit greatly from the strength, discipline and beauty that ballet can offer them.<\/p>\n

Finding a local dance school for your child to attend is easy. Ballet classes tend to take place in most church halls every Saturday up and down the country. But ballet and dance is specialist. The sensible wouldn’t leave their cars at just any mechanics around the corner. However, parents don’t always apply the same logic and commonsense to who is delivering their child’s out of school learning.<\/p>\n

What’s the worst that can happen? Some will say. The answer is possibly actual physical long-term damage to the body.<\/p>\n

Parents with no experience of dance may think they are giving their child the best boost to the extracurricular activities and fitness. But in actual fact, an untrained dancer whose teaching is of poor quality is putting children is putting at physical and emotional risk. The possibility of bodily injury is also high and dreams of becoming a professional dancer in later life are shattered when they realise all the years of ‘work’ have been for nothing.<\/p>\n

Many of these classes take place in those settings that are so familiar, the church halls and community centres round the corner.<\/p>\n

With so many dance classes taking place, how can a parent be sure the school or teacher they select is a good one?<\/p>\n

The Council for Dance Education and Training <\/strong>(CDET) is concerned about the absence of government legislation allowing unqualified and unregulated teachers to lead dance classes.<\/p>\n

The CDET accredits professional training programmes in dance and musical theatre schools and acts as the quality assurance agency of the professional dance industy.<\/p>\n

Through its Recognised Awards<\/strong> scheme it works with schools and teachers training students under the age of 16 to make sure that good standards of practice are met within dance schools.<\/p>\n

Whilst the scheme has been running successfully for four years, more awareness about the dangers of unregulated dance teaching is needed.<\/p>\n

The Council are urging employers, students and parents to make sure dance schools they send their children to meet good professional practice. Even schools and educational settings can benefit from becoming more quality aware when choosing an outside provider to come into establishment and lead sessions.<\/p>\n

Some of the things to look for when choosing a good dance school are:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ask for the credentials of a dance school or teacher<\/p>\n

Do they have insurance?<\/p>\n

Does the teacher and any staff have an Enhanced CRB check<\/p>\n

Find out what their teaching qualifications are
\nDo they have any experience?<\/p>\n

A school or teacher who has a CDET Recognised Award will meet all these requirements to be given the award<\/p>\n

When choosing a ballet school, a UK trained teacher will usually have trained through a reputable teacher training organisation such as Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), Royal Academy of Dance(RAD), British Ballet Organization (BBO), British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA), International Dance Teachers’ Association (IDTA),United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dancing and KindredArts (UKA).<\/p>\n
