A new cartoon<\/span><\/span> aiming to help parents deal with a child going into anaphylactic shock has been released this week.<\/p>\n

The cartoon has been launched by EpiPen\u00ae Auto-Injector as part of Food Allergy and Intolerance Week.<\/p>\n

Around seven young people are killed by fatal allergic reactions every year.<\/p>\n

Common food triggers include nuts and peanuts but dairy products such as milk and eggs, fish and shellfish and fruit can also be a trigger.<\/p>\n

The ABC of being prepared for an anaphylactic shock<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>
\nA = Awareness of symptoms<\/strong>
\nCommon symptoms of a severe attack are:
\n\u2022 Swelling of tongue or throat
\n\u2022 Wheezing, coughing, noisy breathing
\n\u2022 Struggling to speak or swallow
\n\u2022 Feeling of impending doom
\n\u2022 Lethargy\/collapse\/unconsciousness<\/p>\n

B = Be Prepared<\/strong>
\nMake sure you know how to use your pen \u2013 and practise regularly. Free training devices are available to order from www.epipen.co.uk<\/p>\n

C = Carry two pens<\/strong>
\nSometimes it is necessary to administer a second pen 5-15 minutes after the initial dose, if symptoms do not improve sufficiently. It is therefore advisable that patients are prescribed and carry two pens.<\/p>\n

D = Don\u2019t dela<\/strong>y
\nEpipen Jr (adrenaline) auto-injector should be given immediately, as symptom onset and progression can be rapid.<\/p>\n

E = Explain to others<\/strong>
\nShow teachers, grandparents and siblings where the pens are kept and how to use them so they can get comfortable with its administration if required.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
