A total of 78 per cent of mums said they bought unnecessary items for their first baby,\u00a0including designer baby clothes, wipe warmers and shoes for newborns.<\/p>\n
Of these, 18 per cent admitted to overspending on items, worried they would need something in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n
The findings from research by Sainsbury\u2019s Little Ones, also showed mums were happy to buy own-brand wipes and nappies and use hand-me-downs for their second child.<\/p>\n
Parent and Child expert, Dr. Pat Spungin, said \u201cExperience is the best teacher, as we can see from this research. First time mothers are going through all the stages of their baby\u2019s development for the first time, which inevitably means they turn to those around them \u2013 be it people they know or independent experts \u2013 for extra reassurance. Second-time mothers on the other hand are more willing to trust their instincts and this ultimately affects the way they care for their baby. The most important thing for any mother to recognise, regardless of whether she\u2019s a first or second-time mum, is that there isn’t a rule book; a mother is always the authority on her baby.\u201d<\/p>\n
