Families renting damp and mouldy properties are being warned to take care of their health.<\/p>\n
Allergy UK, is warning that damp conditions in rented accommodation is leaving people at risk of respiratory problems, constant cold-like symptoms and other fungal infections caused by microscopic mould spores.<\/p>\n
According\u00a0to a recent\u00a0survey by Shelter, 35 per cent of renting families have a problem with damp in their homes, with 17 per cent having to put up with a leaking roof or windows.<\/p>\n
To help manage damp homes, Allergy UK has the following advice:<\/p>\n
Moulds flourish in damp environments so prevent growth by keeping rooms well ventilated, with windows slightly open.<\/p>\n
Thoroughly cleaning your kitchen, bathroom and utility room will help prevent mould growth.<\/p>\n
Do not hang wet clothes inside or over radiators<\/p>\n
Clean mould from window frames and always remove condensation.<\/p>\n
Keep houseplants to a minimum and change the topsoil regularly.<\/p>\n
Do not use humidifiers \u2022 It is essential to empty, clean and dry the water reservoir of dehumidifiers daily.<\/p>\n
Enclosed allergy bedding covers to protect you from mould spores within the mattress, pillows and duvets.<\/p>\n
Carpet harbours house dust mites and mould spores.<\/p>\n
Choose an Allergy UK approved flooring.<\/p>\n
If you need to keep your carpet, use a vacuum with HEPA filtration.<\/p>\n
Using an air purifier in the bedroom can help to trap airborne allergens.<\/p>\n
If you rent your home and feel that damp might be damaging you or your family\u2019s health, you should first contact your landlord. If you have further problems you should contact your local council.<\/p>\n
