Wraxall and Nailsea residents are angry that a mobile phone antenna has been put up near their homes despite being refused planning permission. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Vodafone phone mast blighting an area of outstanding natural beauty<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the 23rd of September 2008, Vodafone made a planning application to put up a 10 metre high antenna and cabinet on Lodge Lane, Wraxall.<\/p>\n

Local residents disputed the planning application, and on the 12th of November 2008, the application was rejected.<\/p>\n

This was because the proposed mast and cabinet would be sited in a prominent position, and its design, height and location would be harmful to the character and appearance of the area.<\/p>\n

In early 2009, residents were dismayed when work began at the previously proposed location. On speaking to the workmen showing the refused notice, they were told to ‘clear off’ as they were carrying out work for Wessex Water and BT, not mentioning Vodafone.<\/p>\n

Under planning laws for mobile phone masts, the council has 56 days to respond to an application. This has left a legal loop hole open that providers such as Vodafone use to put up masts where planning has been refused. Companies allege that the town planners have taken longer than 56 days to respond, automatically giving them the planning permission they need to put up masts.<\/p>\n

Local resident Mark Corbett of Lodge Lane, lives less than 30 meters from the mast and objected to the original application. Speaking of the mast he blasts as a health hazard he said: \u201cAs I work from home I’m pretty much here 18 hours of a day. The evidence that masts are detrimental to people’s health has been both proved and disproved by both sides. Regardless of this even if there is a 1% chance I still think this is too much, and the fact that the government have already admitted and agreed to EU regulations to distance these masts from schools and hospitals is conclusive enough for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople within a 1\/2 km radius will also share the\u00a0devastating\u00a0effect on house prices these masts have. Things are hard enough as it is but having a 40ft radioactive transmitter in touching distance of our properties, of which three of my neighbours are listed buildings – some of the oldest original homes in the area in fact,\u00a0 is just too much to comprehend at the moment. We had planned to move when the market steadies, however now I think this will be near on impossible.<\/p>\n

The location of mobile phone masts have been the concern of the EU this month after Members of\u00a0 Parliament called for stricter regulation and protection for both residents and consumers.<\/p>\n

According to a new report drafted by the Belgium politician Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Ries, and adopted by the European Parliament, Antennas, mobile phone masts and other electromagnetic emitting devices should be set within a specific distance from schools and health institutions.<\/p>\n

The report acknowledges the benefit of wireless and electromagnetic technologies, but also raised concerns over the uncertainties of health risks, especially those posed to children and young people.<\/p>\n

The placement of mobile phone masts should be negotiated between the industry, public authorities and residents’ associations to minimise health risks and legal action cases. This will make sure that EMF-transmitting devices are kept clear of schools, cr\u00e8ches, retirement homes and hospitals.<\/p>\n

The Lodge Lane antenna is positioned with Wraxall C of E Primary School on the Bristol Road, and the Granary nursing home on Lodge Lane less than a mile away. The Granary specialises in the housing and healthcare of elderly people with dementia. Wraxall school typically takes young children from the age of four years.<\/p>\n

According to Vodafone’s website, they already have complete phone coverage in this area. The new mast is not for phone calls but to improve their 3G coverage including distribution of ring tones, games, picture and video messages.<\/p>\n

Vodafone spokes person Ilana Clark said: \u201cThe Vodafone radio base station at Lodge Lane, Wraxall has been installed to improve 3G coverage to our customers in the area.\u00a0 This will provide our customers with access to mobile broadband with speeds similar to those offered by fixed line broadband suppliers.\u00a0 Vodafone has valid planning permission to build this site.\u00a0 This permission was granted because the local planning authority did not send the decision notice to Vodafone within the prescribed timescale under relevant planning legislation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognise that some communities are concerned regarding the deployment of radio base stations. All of our base stations are designed, built and operated in accordance with stringent international guidelines laid down by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. The adoption of these guidelines has the formal backing of independent bodies such as the World Health Organisation. Typical public exposures from our base stations will be many hundreds, if not thousands, of times below these guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n

A similar situation is currently happening in Clevedon, where local residents are trying to stop a Vodafone mast being put up without planning permission by disrupting work, lying on the ground to stop the construction.<\/p>\n

So far, North Somerset Council have not been able to provide a comment on the situation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
