Search for the theatre’s website and look for the Access Department.

Are there any Relaxed Performances/Autism Friendly performances?

Is it possible to do a familiarisation visit?

If somebody is booking for you, or go through general ticket sales:

Would an end of row seat near the exit be best?

High high up can you go? Remember cheaper seats can be extremely high up and not conventional theatre seats.

Check for concessions. There are not always concessions for children these days. But, there may be concessions for people with disabilities and their carers.

If you have older children or teenagers who would like to go on their own, speak to the Access Department to see if it is possible to remain on the premises without watching the show in case your children need you.

Before you leave:
Theatre seats can be itchy – not ideal for people with sensory issues. Take something to cover them.

Don’t make children dress up, let them wear whatever suits them and keeps them comfortable.

The temperature of the auditorium can vary massively depending on whether you are sitting directly under the air conditioning. It can be sweltering or freezing within the space of two rows. Again, bear this in mind when selecting clothes.

Assume the theatre does not have booster seats. Take the bottom of your car seat in, or a thick comfortable cushion. You don’t want to faff around folding up coats.

Ear defenders are great for lots of children. You don’t want to leave five minutes after curtain up when the baddie comes in with a loud pyrotechnic.

Take fiddle toys. Things like Tangles are ideal.

Don’t forget weighted lap cushions if these are useful.

You have probably researched the show well and may have even done dry runs. If this is all new to you, then spend plenty of time talking to your child about where they are going and what will happen. Sometimes it can be useful to make up a book in advance or take a card-fan featuring some of the things that will happen. Images such as programme, ice cream, money, toilet, drink, too loud or scared can be useful.

At the theatre:
There will be a member of staff in the theatre whose role is to be available to all customers/patrons with access requirements. This is why booking through the Access Department is the best option.

If you book independently, there will be members of staff in all areas of the auditorium who will be able to help you during the performance. If your child experiences difficulties and you need to leave or need some help, it can be useful to explain directly to the staff member like this: “My child has xxxx it would be really helpful if you could xxxx” This will enable the staff member to take the best course of action to help you both.

Remember, although a private box may look like a good idea, in many venues they are usually restricted viewing meaning you cannot see all of the stage. They will usually have conference chairs in and typically have zero legroom. But they can be really good if you know your child will not manage to sit still enough through the show. Boxes are never suitable for children who like to climb or are ‘runners’ and like to climb.

Is there a chill-out zone or space you can use during the show if necessary? You will usually be allowed to sit in the bar, but you may find this uncomfortable as staff are throwing out interval orders quickly.

There will be an accessible toilet in the venue, usually on the ground floor. This is perfect to use as it will avoid stressful queuing.

Ask a staff member about running times. They will know this down to the nearest minute. Then you will know exactly how long you have should your child struggle to get through the first half.

In the performance:
Getting a programme can be really useful for keeping tabs on the running order. You can do this through the list of songs or scenes.

Are there sudden loud noises?

Will strobe be used?

Will it be loud?

Will there be smoke effects?

If you child has a meltdown or sensory overload, you won’t be the first. Deal with it as you usually would and try to filter out everyone around you. Try to summon a member of staff, who would hopefully have the common sense to either guide other audience members in a different direction, be able to help you to a quiet, private space, or at least prevent gawkers.

Flash Points

The Incoming
This is when the theatre opens its doors to the public. It’s an absolute sensory overload. There will be brightly lit areas, sales staff trying to attract attention, sometimes loud music playing.

Potentially, several thousand people will be entering the building at the same time. Many of the older theatres will have lots of stairs, limited numbers of overcrowded toilets and areas which bottleneck.

The Interval
This time is all about revenue for the theatre and comfort for the customers. It’s going to be loud, busy and stressful, usually packed into a twenty minute period of time. There will be queues for the sales points. If you want ice creams but know you will be unable to queue for them, speak to a member of staff on the incoming who may be able to help you pre-order drinks or ice creams. Usually, you cannot pre-order hot drinks or ice creams because of timings when staff are putting out interval orders. Tell them it is because of a disability issue and they will usually do it just for you.

The outgoing
This is when the show has finished. Again, this is busy and chaotic and a third opportunity to lose your child.

You may find it useful to remain seated, or wait in a quiet area until much of the theatre has cleared.

Again, this is another time when staff will be trying to make sales, so be prepared for things to be loud, brightly lit and in your face.

Issues to be aware of when planning a visit to the theatre with a child with autism or sensory processing

[185

post-24115","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sensory-ideas
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
