Bristol and the South West region has some of the most amazing historical places. You can take all of your London, but you won’t beat our Clifton Suspension Bridge.<\/p>\n
In fact, the world’s first bungee jump too place off of the bridge, not in New Zealand as is more commonly thought. Members of the\u00a0Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club jumped off the bridge in April 1979. Of course, attached to a long stretchy rope.<\/p>\n
Now Historic England – you may remember them as English Heritage – is calling for people in our gloriously green region to nominate local places that have made national or even global history.<\/p>\n
Irreplaceable: A History of England in 100 Places will be judged by a panel to include\u00a0Mary Beard, George Clarke, Tristram Hunt and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.<\/p>\n
There will be ten categories in which to nominate your favourite famous bit of South West history, including Science & Discovery, Music & Literature and Homes & Garden. The places that make the cut will feature in a book and podcast series.<\/p>\n
Chief Executive of Historic England, Duncan Wilson said: \u201cBy telling a history of England in 100 places, we want to help people understand the many places in our country that have shaped the world, creating advances in science, the arts, trade and industry. We are looking forward to people nominating places in the South West that will engender a sense of pride and are important to our national story. We\u2019re hoping to uncover some hidden gems that can be celebrated and shared.\u201d<\/p>\n
