Despite being part of the national curriculum, school children are not getting the opportunity to take part in cookery lessons.<\/p>\n
Research carrier out by the makers of Flora, shockingly revealed that a third of school children aged 7-12\u00a0 said that they never have cookery lessons. Schools do not have enough cooking equipment available to allow the whole class to take part in lessons, reported 46 per cent of children questioned.<\/p>\n
The healthy eating and living message is getting through with 41 per cent of children believing that cooking lessons will help themselves to look after themselves in later life. An impressive 29 per cent wanted to learn to cook so they were able to make healthy meals at home, showing that children are aware of the importance a healthy balanced diet can give them.<\/p>\n
To help develop children\u2019s culinary skills, Flora is offering free cooking equipment to primary schools across the UK and Ireland as well as providing teachers with resources and support packs to go with it.
\nLast year, Flora launched Cooking with Schools, and they are aiming to build on this success. Cottesbroke Junior School in Birmingham was one such school which struggled with resources until the Cooking with School initiative was launched.<\/p>\n
Business manager at Cottesbrooke school, Jayne Barber, said: \u201cWe were absolutely thrilled with our Cooking with Schools delivery,\u201d. \u201cIn the past we have really struggled with our limited resources and some of the teachers have even brought in their own bowls and spatulas from home. Being so well set up for cooking lessons now, we have set up a weekly after school healthy eating cook club, which has proved to be very popular.\u201d<\/p>\n
