Why? Because Wick House, the hostel on Wick Road in Brislington, has put in retrospective planning permission for a fence. Residents are in outrage according to this morning’s Bristol Post. But residents have been in perpetual outage about Wick House for some time.

We’ve written about Wick House before. I feel very strongly about it. I lived in Brislington for nearly ten years. I worked in Brislington and ran a business from Brislington. I leased commercial premises in Brislington. My children went to school in Brislington – on the estate where the disabled Iranian was murdered and set on fire.

I also worked in a school right next door to Wick House in an education support job. My GP surgery is still in Brislington on Wick Road and I regularly use the oft quoted ‘methadone pharmacy’.

Whilst ordinarily I would never reveal so much about my life on the internet, I feel tight chested with anger that yet again, Wick House residents are being persecuted. As a former Brislington resident from the vicinity of Wick House, I never once had an issue with anyone living there. I never noticed them loitering around the school. I saw them on occasion politely pop into the pharmacy for methadone. There may have been some times I saw them with – wait for the horror – cans of alcohol in their hands.

The hostel has also submitted retrospective planning permission because it was housing more residents than originally intended. This is probably indicative of the lack of support services and facilities available to people in Bristol rather than a personal attack on BS4.

Local Lib Dem councillor Jos Clark, appears to have taken it upon herself to keep Bristol residents informed. Her Wick House updates come thick and fast on Facebook community pages, each time spurring negative comments about residents drinking alcohol and collecting medication from the local Boots pharmacy. I remember one mother replying that she didn’t want her child to see a resident taking methadone. How the child would know what it was is curious. Also, perhaps the mother is not aware that addiction is neither viral or contagious.

I am now based very close to Logos House. That’s a huge Salvation Army hostel on Wade Street in Central Bristol. I’ve been here two years and have seen everything. Nothing surprises me anymore. Blood, vomit, spit, alcohol, fighting, police, ambulances, upset and drama. As my seven year old would say “It’s just St Judes, it’s never boring is it?”.

I was disappointed to have missed the incident where after a car collision on the main road, helpful residents a little worse for wear tried to direct traffic. But I don’t judge them. Who am I to judge?

I once had to come home through the back bin gate because a Logos House resident was having a crisis in the main doorway. Two police officers spent a long time calmly talking with him, trying to get him to see the positives he had achieved and to keep going. Imagine then being such an asshat of a local resident that I would campaign and petition to have him and others in his situation booted out of his home. It’s unthinkable.

And yet in Brislington West that’s exactly what’s happening right now. There are local residents who have decided that some members of their community are some type of subspecies and have no business living near them. Think of the children!!

When trawling through the planning permission objections, the same comments arise time after time. Those objecting simply don’t want people with needs, difficulties or addictions living in Brislington. They want them out:

‘I work in the local school on Wick road and I think it’s wrong that children have to walk up and down the road seeing people drinking first thing in the morning also seeing anti social behaviour.’

‘Also the police and ambulance’s attend Wick house on a daily basis and I feel this is a waste of are service.’

‘It’s totally in the wrong place to close to people’s homes and schools.’

‘We have school’s at both ends of Wick Road and children have to walk up and down the road seeing people drinking first thing in the morning or asleep on the grass by the local church why they wait for there school buses.’

‘We are afraid to go to our local chemist shop when the residents go for their methodone, they walk along the street in groups which is very intimidating.’

Images: Facebook – Local Lib Dem Councillor Jos Clark, has flooded local Facebook sites

The Peckham Riot scene in Only Fools and Horses is a bit like walking down Wade Street at times. We get big groups of people gathering to drink in the summer. Usually, they split sideways when we are walking to or from school. They keep themselves to themselves, sometimes they call out hello. Quite how Brislington residents would cope with a cheery greeting remains to be seen. We always manage a friendly hello back without feeling intimidated.

You have to worry about grown adults who are afraid to go to a local chemist because of a prescribed medication handed out. You have to be concerned about those who don’t want their children to grow up seeing street drinkers. You have to avoid being friends with people who want those who don’t meet a required standard to be removed from their homes and thrown to the street. Or housed elsewhere so that their own children don’t experience it. What are these adults teaching their children? It’s certainly not empathy, tolerance or community spirit. It’s bigotry, hatred and spite.

The Consol tanning salon in Broadmead Bristol was revealed to be soaking the homeless with water this week. The store’s intention was to prevent them from sleeping in their doorway. The city was in outrage. That outrage spread across the UK. Who on earth could be so heartless that they would intentionally soak people with no homes, forced to sleep in doorways in dangerously cold temperatures and conditions? Probably the objectors in Brislington West for a start.

Homes and spaces will not magically appear for the residents in Wick House that locals want to displace. How the objectors will then feel should the residents take up home in the bike shop doorway or begging by the deli or setting up tents in St Anne’s Park. God forbid the children will see this. How on earth will the children of BS4 cope seeing people in hardship on a daily basis? Probably the same as mine do. With a bit of empathy, understanding and seeing them for human beings who are also part of the local community.

Wick House Brislington Opinion Hold the front page.
