Government Funds ‘bright’ disadvantaged children from private and state schools:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The government has announced that they will be funding a programme supporting the\u00a0‘brightest pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds’ with millions of pounds for schools – including private schools – to bid on.<\/p>\n

The Future Talent Fund programme, will go towards helping the most ‘talented disadvantaged’ pupils stay in line academically with children from affluent backgrounds.<\/p>\n

There’s \u00a323M in funds which organisations can apply for through two rounds of bidding to test out around 30 trial projects. The multi million pound scheme will suss out best practice and interventions based on evidence.<\/p>\n

These could then be funded by individual schools using their Pupil Premium funding, though using Pupil Premium to raise expectations for only the ‘brightest’ disadvantaged children would go against what it is intended for.<\/p>\n

Government guidelines currently state that Pupil Premium is ‘additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils of all<\/em> abilities and to close the gaps between them and their peers’. This money is given to schools based upon each child who is eligible for free school meals despite their level of academic potential.<\/p>\n

According to the government’s own statistics, they have enabled a ‘record’ number of children – 1.9 million more than in 2010 – to attend a good or outstanding school.<\/p>\n

But in central Bristol, there are several schools which operate backdoor admission policies that exclude local children in deprived areas from attending. These include faith admissions, music, languages and random allocation policies. All of the schools are Ofsted outstanding and are in the top five most oversubscribed schools in the city, yet, local children in some of the most deprived wards of Bristol are unable to get places.<\/p>\n

The government are also proud of their narrowing of the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their affluent peers. The gap has narrowed by ten per cent at secondary level since 2011.<\/p>\n

Data for 2017 also finds that more pupils from low-income families and those with Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND) are being entered for English Baccalaureate (EBacc) subjects than previous years.<\/p>\n

But this claim is discordant with current feeling from the Send community who are finding it an impossible struggle to get school places, secure support in schools, including obtaining an Education, Health and Care Plan – formerly known as a Statement.<\/p>\n

Last month, The National Education Union (NEU) slammed funding and support from government for local authorities at its annual conference. They said cuts had taken away resources for children with Send, with the children ultimately paying the price.<\/p>\n

The number of\u00a0 children with Send waiting for a school place doubled between 2016 to 17 from 1,710 to 4,050. These numbers don’t include children who are out of school with stress caused by lack of Send support, school refusal or those who have been removed from school for their own welfare and are being educated at home.<\/p>\n

School Standards Minister Nick Gibb said: “Academic standards are rising, with 1.9 million more children in good or outstanding schools than 2010 and importantly, the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers narrowing. But we want to make sure every child reaches their full potential and is not held back because of their circumstances.<\/p>\n

Through this Future Talent Fund we will test new and innovative approaches so that we can find out what works best to ensure the brightest pupils from the most disadvantaged families can excel in their education.”<\/p>\n

Private independent schools will be eligible to apply for the funding, as will multi academy trusts, state schools, charities and research organisations.<\/p>\n

The money can go towards appropriate projects such as broadening of the curriculum, digital technology, working with parents, one to one tutition, summer schools or after school activities.<\/p>\n
