{"id":34326,"date":"2018-05-03T10:56:09","date_gmt":"2018-05-03T09:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/?p=34326"},"modified":"2023-10-03T14:41:13","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T13:41:13","slug":"minervas-owls-of-bath-2018-public-art-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/minervas-owls-of-bath-2018-public-art-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Minerva&#8217;s Owls of Bath 2018 Public Art Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Owl Trail Bath:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bath will be playing host to a parliament of owls this summer as a brand new public art event takes over the city.<\/p>\n<p>Minerva&#8217;s Owls of Bath 2018, will feature 100 different designs on sculptures placed across the city.<\/p>\n<p>Large Owls standing at 1.1m tall and perching on 40cm high plinths, will be transformed into incredible designs by artists, designers and celebrities.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller Owlets, at 75cm, will be decorated by local schools and community groups and will be returned to them after the event.<\/p>\n<p>The event follows the success of King Bladud&#8217;s Pig trails (2008) and Lion of Bath (2010), which have taken place in Bath in previous years.<\/p>\n<p>Minerva\u2019s Owls event organiser, Megan Witty said: \u201cPeople have been asking us for some time to organise another sculpture trail for the city along similar lines to the popular Pigs and Lions of Bath sculpture trails. Events like this are a fantastic way of shining a spotlight on our region\u2019s creativity and heritage, increasing visitor numbers, bringing colour and fun activities to the streets of Bath, and raising much needed funds for local charities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project has been inspired by the\u00a0Roman Goddess Minerva, whose animal symbol was an owl. The Roman Bath Temple, located in the heart of the city, was dedicated to the goddess in the 1st century AD.<\/p>\n<p>The event will launch at the end of June 2018 and run until the owls are collected for a charity auction in late October.<\/p>\n<p>The profits from the auction will go to four local charities, with 70 per cent pledged to Royal United Hospital&#8217;s new Cancer Centre, 30 per cent to Bath Young Carers, the Roman Baths Archway Project and the Bath based UK Little Owl Project.<\/p>\n<p>Founder of the UK Little Owl Project, Dr Emily Jo\u00e1chim said: \u201cI am delighted that my favourite owl is being celebrated in this way. I cannot wait to see 100 beautiful Little Owl sculptures displayed across my home city this summer. Little Owl numbers have rapidly declined by 61 per cent since 1990; we think intensive modern farming practices are driving this decline.
