Pub karaoke til 2am next door, barking dog adjacent, 2am DIY upstairs, 24 hour fighting on the street, drug taking, police banging on the doors and the day-long beep, beep, beeping of the forklift on the trading estate opposite from 6am, we defy anyone to come up with a more noise hellish area than that of Wade Street in Bristol.<\/p>\n
But noise generally is causing stress, anxiety and forcing one in six people to move homes.<\/p>\n
It’s not just the pain that moving causes, but in the meantime, constantly disrupted sleep is causing a whole stack of health problems.<\/p>\n
Those affected by noise pollution say they have sleep disturbance which causes anger, mood swings and an inability to concentrate.<\/p>\n
According to the findings from Everest Home who polled 2000 UK adults, 16 per cent have moved because of noise, with another five per cent saying they are currently seriously considering it.<\/p>\n
The top five most common noise annoyances were found to be – Anti-social behaviour (16 per cent), Neighbours (15 per cent), Car or house alarms (14 per cent), Road noise or traffic (13 per cent) and other people\u2019s pets (10 per cent).<\/p>\n
A lucky 46 per cent of people are woken from outside noise just once a week, causing an average of 70 disrupted nights a year.<\/p>\n
Only 32 per cent said they felt able to complain to the noise maker, with 16 per cent wearing earplugs instead.<\/p>\n
Psychologist Emma Kenny says: \u201cGetting an uninterrupted and peaceful night\u2019s sleep ensures we are physically and emotionally rested and allows our bodies to heal from the stresses and strains of modern day living. If the noise outside is affecting our ability to rest and relax, we are likely to experience a whole host of negative issues, including irritability, lack of focus and exhaustion, which can impact on every aspect of our life. That\u2019s why it\u2019s imperative to create a relaxing space, with as little noise pollution as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
