The mumpreneur is turning into the driving force behind the economy, as mums come under pressure to return to work while their babies are still young. According to the Office for National Statistics, almost one one million women now own businesses with nearly half a milion working from home.<\/p>\n

Four mums who have shunned paid employment to keep their family their priority and fit earning their own money around it now have successful business and offer some advice.<\/p>\n

Precious hobby turns into booming business<\/strong><\/p>\n

Looking for a creative hobby to fit around caring for her young baby, mum of one and force behind Precious Parcels<\/strong>, Natalie Hickey, created a few decorative plaques to brighten up her house. Her family were so impressed that they suggested making them to sell on Ebay.<\/p>\n

To Natalie’s surprise and delight, she sold more than 300 items in the first five weeks, leading her to turn her hobby in the start of a fledgling business.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve always enjoyed being creative\u201d she says, \u201cBut I’ve not been taught anything specific. I began painting when I was about 11 and love all sorts of crafts from clay modelling to card making. The combination of designing and promoting the website and making the items has been so much fun for me. I’m really in my element!\u201d<\/p>\n

Natalie has some good advice for mums who would like to pursue their dream of setting up their own business. She says: \u201cFirst of all, don’t assume that you need a huge budget behind you to get
\nyour idea off the ground. There are ways and means. Free advertising can drum up more business than you think.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecondly, don’t worry if you don’t know it all! You don’t have to be educated in all areas to run a business. You need a good idea and a realistic plan. There are a number of free support networks out there. Even forums that many people use just to say “Hi” can be a good place to get advice and feedback.<\/p>\n

\u201cThirdly, don’t put it off!! If you’ve been contemplating a new venture for a while, chances are you won’t stop thinking about it until you’ve given it a go. Get the support of your family or friends and go for it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mother of Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Busy mum Sarah Dawnay, was not content just to set up a business after was made redundant. Sarah set up Mothers of Innovation<\/strong>, a website packed full of problem solving family products.<\/p>\n

She explains: \u201cAs a Mum I had already come up with a great design for my little girl when she needed a coat but hated putting one on. I realised that there must be many Mums like me, who have great ideas and skills but who just lack an appropriate way to get their products to market; thus Mothers of Innovation was born!\u201d<\/p>\n

As well as Mothers of Innovation building a new career for her, she is determined that it should also be a great resource to help other mums with ideas for starting in business.<\/p>\n

The website stocks plenty of great products with subtle parenting tips to pick up along the way.<\/p>\n

Ten tips from successful pre-school group business mum <\/strong><\/p>\n

Karen Sherr has now been in business for twenty years with her pre-school activity group Musical Minis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Karen, now 46 and mum to three, started Musical Minis to provide fun and stimulating sessions based on what she knew her own baby son Matthew would love.<\/p>\n

Combining this with her experience as a play specialist as Great Ormond Street Hospital, she developed her fun sessions into a successful formula across the UK and even in Mumbai.<\/p>\n

For other mumprenuer Karen came up with ten tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Research the market and competition.<\/p>\n

2. Start small, let the business grow as and when you can cope with expansion.<\/p>\n

3. Have a clear idea what you want out of the business<\/p>\n

4. Try to separate work from home. If your business is based at home (as all the Musical Minis administration is) have a second phone line fitted.<\/p>\n

5. Have backup. If your child is ill what will happen to your business?<\/p>\n

6. Know your limitations. For example if you have problems with accounts, get someone to help you.<\/p>\n

7. If there are not enough hours in the day to do everything, do the bits you like (with both work and home life) and get help with the bits you don’t.<\/p>\n

8. Work out the balance between work and home that you want.<\/p>\n

9. Keep time to be a mum<\/p>\n

10.Set time aside to deal with administration, household tasks etc. If you keep putting it off the task will become huge (hours of paperwork for example \u2013 or loads of ironing) – regular manageable chunks of mundane but important tasks will help things flow smoothly.<\/p>\n

Karen adds: \u201cI think one of the major things I have learned is to set out a strategy and to follow it. Working with a strategy gives a sense of being in control and even if things do not develop as one may wish, it makes the identification of where things are not going right far easier.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other major lesson is to continually revisit every aspect of the business. It is too easy to be complacent and resistant to change. Having somebody else challenge your beliefs and rationale is really useful and can quickly help you refocus when you have lost your way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Painting a face of confidence<\/strong><\/p>\n

Face painter Deborah, of Creating the Way, had never worked for herself until after she had her first child. Whilst on maternity leave and with the date to return to work getting closer, she realised that spending time with her baby was what she wanted to do, but earning money was a must. A close friend persuaded her to train in theatre make up and turn to face painting. Perfect for fitting in around family.<\/p>\n

Deborah says: \u201cI love the flexibility that working for myself can offer. This means I can juggle work around looking after my child. That way I get to spend quality time with her without being over tired from work. Working for yourself is great. The only person you have to answer to is you. Once you work for yourself you will never want to work for someone else again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStarting a new business, especially in something you have no experience in can be daunting. You may not possess all the skills you need such as marketing, advertising or admin but gut instinct and learning as you earn can make up for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep early ventures simple and build on successes. If something clearly isn’t working, reassess it or ditch it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the early days it’s about confidence. Even if it is your very first job turn up in full confidence and it will inspire the people around you to trust that you are the best person for the job.\u201d<\/p>\n
