Our Learning City Partnership Board has made reading a priority for the coming year. Building on the strong foundations of the Reading Recovery Programme and Open the Door for Reading, we aim to create a city where every child’s a reader.”

Our Opinion: Marvin Rees went ahead with £5m of cuts to this year’s Send funding without a consultation or equality impact study. In July, a group of parents took the Mayor and council to court over the cuts, winning their case.

Volunteering to read with children in school is a great way to encourage their ability and confidence. However, from the point of view of a parent whose child has struggled with reading due to dyslexia, these schemes are often ways of box ticking for records and are used in place of suitable Send support for some children whilst placating parents that help is put in place.

Marvin Rees’ part in this is cutting with one hand, whilst getting the good will of volunteers to do what professionals need to being doing properly, but for free because it’s cheap. There’s no doubt that frequent reading with children who are lagging behind is massively beneficial. But in my experience schools won’t always talk to parents whose children are lagging behind.

At one Bristol school my children went to, a member of staff told me a few days before my child left for junior school that he was over two years behind with his reading. I’d sat not a week before in the headteacher’s office with the head and the SendCo of the time saying that I was desperately worried and I thought there was a problem. I still remember the SendCo rubbing his hair furiously whilst declaring that none of the teaching staff had noticed an issue.

Another teacher at the same school said I needed to be aware there was a reading problem with my other child, but she didn’t want to stick her neck out or be quoted.

To make this news story even more offensive is the use of a case study included which focused on a volunteer who went into one Bristol school that has failed children with Send. Failed them with their reading, failed to put in reasonable adjustments where necessary and has indirectly and directly excluded children with autism. A bold claim, but one we can back up with files of paperwork heaving with evidence.

The head teacher of this school gave Bristol City Council a quote for the press release saying that the volunteer has ‘made such a difference helping hundreds of our struggling readers’. Some of those readers would not have been struggling had the school managed to implement effective behaviour policies which had a direct affect on children with autism and their ability to even attend school in the first place.

The readers might not have been struggling had teachers again admitted where there were genuine difficulties and put into place effective IEPs and Send support. It was not until moving my children to another school that the true picture of their deceit really began to emerge.

My son is about to start secondary school in year 7 and even before he has officially set foot in the building, a range of interventions and send support has already been put into place. Much of this has stemmed from the dishonesty of schools who had an opportunity to say there was a problem but instead lied. It’s not fair that when it comes to the basics, the maths, the reading, that children are always on a catch-up because of shoddy headteachers and what appears to be a culture of fear in some some schools when it comes to being honest.

My daughter is about to go into year 4 and has spent the last few weeks of the summer holiday begging me not to send her back. That’s the dyslexia talking. I have submitted an Assessment of Need to Bristol City Council with a view to getting an EHCP. But as Send parents in Bristol know, the process is grim and mostly ends up at tribunal. According to the new scheme launched by the council, she won’t even benefit from reading support with a volunteer because she’s too old. The scheme simply won’t have a volunteer for ‘every child who needs one’ that is clearly a lie.

Whilst it’s brilliant that people are prepared to give up their time to help support children, I can’t help but feel this is another sticking plaster for education cuts.

The press release goes on to say: ‘A number of Learning City priorities have recently been agreed for Bristol by the Partnership Board. Education partners will work together to improve: children’s literacy, outcomes for children with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND), school attendance, and pathways for young people into further/higher education and employment.’

As a Send Parent, I’ll believe that when I see it.

More from Chopsy Baby
Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/chopsybaby/
Follow us on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/chopsy_baby
Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/chopsybristol
Follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/chopsybristol
Go Home http://www.chopsybaby.com

Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees wants to make sure there’s a reading volunteer for each child in school who needs one,

[222,6

post-35863","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bristol-send","category-bristol-news
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
