Nearly three quarters of young people in the South West tell friends and family that they are ‘fine’ even if struggling with their mental health.<\/p>\n
Research from an anti-stigma mental health charity Time to Change, found that 70 per cent of 16-24 year olds in the region say the are fine, even when struggling with things like anxiety or depression.<\/p>\n
A 50 per cent of those not telling the truth did so because they didn’t want to ‘burden’ people. And 55 per cent said that just because people asked didn’t mean they actually wanted to know.<\/p>\n
Time to Change in response is running an Ask Twice campaign, urging friends and relatives to ask again if they think someone they know is struggling with their mental health.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we consider that 75 per cemt of all mental health problems are established by the age of 24, it\u2019s all the more important that young people feel supported Jo Loughran, Director of Time to Change said.<\/p>\n
“Our research shows that asking \u2018Are you OK?\u2019 is often not enough. Asking twice is a simple, effective way to show that you\u2019re asking for real and ready to talk and listen.\u201d<\/p>\n
