{"id":38409,"date":"2019-07-25T12:57:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T11:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/?p=38409"},"modified":"2019-07-25T12:57:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T11:57:00","slug":"school-exclusion-rates-in-bristol-2017-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/school-exclusion-rates-in-bristol-2017-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"School Exclusion Rates in Bristol 2017\/2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>School Exclusion Rates in Bristol 2017\/18:<\/p>\n<p><\/strong>The Department for Education has released the figures for school exclusion rates across England, including the Bristol statistics for 2017\/18.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>National Figures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nationally, the number of permanent exclusions has increased from 7,700 in 2016\/17 to 7,900 in 2017\/18.<\/p>\n<p>Across England, the number of fixed period exclusions has also increased from 4.76 per cent in 2016\/17 to 5.08 per cent in 2017\/18.<\/p>\n<p>Secondary schools are accounting for 80 per cent of all fixed period exclusions.<\/p>\n<p>Again nationally, the rate of fixed period exclusions in special schools decreased from 13.03 per cent to 12.34 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics showed that it was primary, secondary and special school academies that had higher rates of fixed term exclusions than LA maintained schools.<\/p>\n<p>The DoE considers a permanent exclusion to be when a pupil is excluded from school not to return, unless the exclusion is overturned.<\/p>\n<p>A fixed period exclusion refers to a pupil excluded from a school for a set period of time. This can involved part of the school day and does not have to be for a continuous period. A school pupil can be excluded for one or more fixed periods up to a maximum of 45 schools days in a single academic year &#8211; including exclusions from previous schools covered by legislation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bristol Statistics:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For fixed term exclusions, the average number of days lost per pupil excluded in primary school was <strong>3.59<\/strong>. In secondary school it was <strong>3.62<\/strong> and in special schools it was <strong>5.21.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The average number of fixed term exclusions per excluded pupil in primary school was <strong>2.37.<\/strong> In secondary school it was <strong>2.43<\/strong> and in special schools it was <strong>2.80<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Bristol state funded primary schools had the highest number of fixed period exclusions in the South West.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/primary-school-exclusions-bristol-table.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38419\" src=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/primary-school-exclusions-bristol-table.png\" alt=\"primary school exclusions bristol table\" width=\"629\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFor Bristol secondary schools the number was still high, coming second place to Somerset.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/secondary-school-exclusions-bristol-table.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38420\" src=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/secondary-school-exclusions-bristol-table.png\" alt=\"secondary school exclusions bristol table\" width=\"712\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And for special schools in the South West, Bristol again had the highest number of fixed period exclusions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/special-school-exclusions-bristol-table.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38421\" src=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/special-school-exclusions-bristol-table.png\" alt=\"special school exclusions bristol table\" width=\"639\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Permanent Exclusions by Reason in Bristol 17\/18<br \/>\n<\/strong>This information from the school census shows the permanent exclusions for state funded primary, secondary and special schools by reason.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/permanent-exclusions-bristol.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38416\" src=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/permanent-exclusions-bristol.png\" alt=\"permanent exclusions bristol\" width=\"1043\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were two permanent exclusions for verbal abuse or threatening behaviour against a pupil, one for the same against an adult, one for racist abuse, 9 for persistent disruptive behaviour and 1 for &#8216;other&#8217; bringing the Bristol total to 14.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fixed Period Exclusions By Reason in Bristol 17\/18<br \/>\n<\/strong>This information from the school census shows the fixed period exclusions for for state funded primary, secondary and special schools by reason.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/fixed-term-exclusion-bristol.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38415\" src=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/fixed-term-exclusion-bristol.png\" alt=\"fixed term exclusion bristol\" width=\"1043\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bristol has the highest rate of fixed term exclusions for persistent disruptive behaviour, a well known indicator of unmet needs in school.<\/p>\n<p>Persistent disruptive behaviour was the most common reason for exclusions in England in 2017\/18, resulting in 34 per cent of permanent exclusions and 30 per cent of fixed period exclusions.<\/p>\n<p>At 1,203, the city also has the highest exclusion rate in the South West for &#8216;other&#8217; though does not indicate in the tables what this covers.<\/p>\n<p>The higher levels of fixed term exclusions compared to permanent shows that although Bristol has reduced the number of pupils being permanently excluded, significant numbers of children are missing days of education with those in special schools faring the worst.<\/p>\n<p>Bristol had the second highest number of fixed term exclusions in the South West for physical assault against a pupil. It also had the second highest for assault against an adult.
