\/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The final opportunity to feedback into Bristol City Council&#8217;s Written Statement of Action (WSoA), following the release of the Ofsted and CQC Send inspection last year, took place at The Foundation, on Tuesday 25 February.<\/p>\n<p>The event aimed to wrap up parent carer input on the local authority&#8217;s WSoA. In it&#8217;s advertising material, the council stated that it was the &#8216;final opportunity to contribute to the Written Statement of Action SEND Improvement Plan, before we give it to Ofsted.&#8217; It also said that parent carer &#8216;feedback is essential&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>A handful of parent carers attended the drop-in event. Within the Bristol parent carer disability community later that day, many of those who had not attended said they had been unable to take time off of work. Some expressed surprise that the event was taking place having heard nothing about it. Others felt their child or young person&#8217;s disability meant attending the location was too difficult.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anna-Keen-Ofsted-WSoA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39062\" src=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anna-Keen-Ofsted-WSoA.jpg\" alt=\"Anna Keen Ofsted WSoA\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anna-Keen-Ofsted-WSoA.jpg 500w, https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anna-Keen-Ofsted-WSoA-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This was something acknowledged by councillor Anna Keen, Labour Councillor for Hillfields and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Education and Skills.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;I always really appreciate the challenge of events like this for many parents and carers because of the nature of what we&#8217;re talking about. It can often be much more difficult to get to an event because of other things that are going on in your lives, involving your children and I expect that many of you are aware this is one of the many events that have been held around the city since December on top of lots of online outreach that&#8217;s gone on through some of the surveys some of you will have contributed to &#8211; the response to that has been great.<\/p>\n<p>Keen also asked for feedback on how accessible the event was saying &#8220;is this an event that works, you feel, for parent carers or do we need to be reaching out in different ways? What would work for you? That&#8217;s a very important voice for us to hear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The fractured relationships with parents and carers, lack of co-production and variable engagement and collaboration,&#8217; was noted as one of Bristol&#8217;s areas of &#8216;significant weakness&#8217; according to the Ofsted and CQC Bristol Send Inspection report published in November 2019.<\/p>\n<p>It is something Bristol City Council is having to directly address in its WSoA. In a slide presentation, under the five priority areas presented by Keen it stated: &#8216;We know that we have a lot of work to do to gain parent carers&#8217; trust and confidence. We know that this cannot be achieved until you start to see real improvements in SEND processes and provision in Bristol and then see these improvements continue.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The meetings we have had with parent carers since December, and the parent carer survey we are running, are a stating point to helping us understand how we can work better with you in the future; and to get feedback that we can use to do better and keep on improving.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Being able to feedback into the council process for Send was an issue raised in a statement by Nura Aabe in a public statement at an Extraordinary, People Scrutiny Commission on Monday 03 February 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Nura told the commission that she is a Bristol parent carer of five children, three with disabilities, and also the founder of Autism Independence, which represents over 80 families from BAME backgrounds, mostly from the British Somali community.<\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;families who don&#8217;t speak the language, who don&#8217;t understand how the system works are excluded &#8211; as I said earlier. I am fortunate to sit here today and be able to hear and take part. Over the 80 families that I work with, would not be able to be included in this process. So first they didn&#8217;t have a chance to contribute to the consultation of the inspection and now they continue to be excluded in contributing to the action and statement. How does the officers plan to include those that are very voiceless and marginalised in our community?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Claire Hiscott, Chair of People Scrutiny Commission promised to personally take up the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Bristol&#8217;s WSoA must be published before the end of March 2020.
