Children are increasingly believing that smoking is really ‘uncool’ and they are worried about the health of their parents who continue to smoke.<\/p>\n
Research conducted on behalf of NHS Stop Smoking Services surveyed the views of children in England aged 8 \u2013 13 years of age.<\/p>\n
A massive 96 per cent of children with a smoking parent wished they would quit as they are now clued up about health and cancer risks.<\/p>\n
Importantly, nine out of ten children in this impressionable age group had never tried a cigarette themselves and 91 per cent believed they would never do so.<\/p>\n
It seems the message on health and smoking is working, as statistics on tobacco show that regular smoking in children aged 11 \u2013 15 years of age has halved since the mid 1990s.<\/p>\n
The results coincide with the launch of a new Department of Health hard-hitting advertising campaign, aimed at getting parents to quit the habit.<\/p>\n
It features real children talking about how concerned they are at their parent’s smoking habit.<\/p>\n
Gillian Merron, Public Health Minister said: “We understand how difficult it is to stop smoking. I hope this new campaign will give mums and dads the encouragement they need to realise they can do it with help from the NHS, and support from their children.<\/p>\n
“You are four times more likely to quit if you use the free NHS stop smoking service. The facts are clear – every week 2,000 people die from smoking-related diseases, which has a devastating effect on children’s lives.”<\/p>\n
