{"id":47131,"date":"2026-07-26T10:39:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T09:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/?p=47131"},"modified":"2026-08-04T11:21:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T10:21:06","slug":"bristol-city-council-upset-over-puzzle-piece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/bristol-city-council-upset-over-puzzle-piece\/","title":{"rendered":"Bristol City Council Upset Over Puzzle Piece"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The use of puzzle pieces for autistic people is offensive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bristol City Council has caused upset by continuing to use the puzzle piece in its communication with neurodivergent families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symbol was first used in the UK from the 1960s before later being adopted by American organisation Autism Speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use of the symbol has long been derided by autistic people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">it often uses bright primary colours considered to be infantilising. Its advertising carried frightening and stigmatising images and messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organisation has also been ABA and cure-focused rather than advocating and working with autistic led representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The autism community favours a rainbow or gold infinity symbol.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bristol City Council has again used the puzzle piece to advertise its communication around Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (Send).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a post on the Local Offer, Bristol City Council said: \u201cWe\u2019ve been working with children, young people, families and partner organisations to improve our SEND communications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Bristol Send parent, who asked not to be named, said: \u201cHoe ironic in a post about improving Send communications that a puzzle piece has been used. The symbol has been widely rejected by the autism community.
