{"id":529,"date":"2008-12-09T14:27:15","date_gmt":"2008-12-09T14:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/mag\/?p=529"},"modified":"2018-07-02T13:59:06","modified_gmt":"2018-07-02T12:59:06","slug":"charity-advises-careful-use-of-christmas-present","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/charity-advises-careful-use-of-christmas-present\/","title":{"rendered":"Charity Advises Careful Use of Christmas Present"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-font-kerning: 18.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">A leading charity is today advising all those who get an MP3 player from Santa this Christmas to use it responsibly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Arial;\">The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) is urging careful use of the device. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Arial;\">This comes in the wake of a UK-wide field study that reveals 66 per cent of users listen to their MP3 players at a volume louder than 85 decibels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">According to the World Health Organisation, this level can cause permanent damage to hearing over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">The City of Bristol was one of eight cities in which the RNID carried out field research. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">The results showed that of those tested a whopping 66 per cent were listening at more that 85 decibels and 22 per cent at more than 100 decibels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">Overall 54 per cent of those tested were risking permanent hearing damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">RNID&#8217;s Director of External Affairs, Emma Harrison said: &#8220;Our research found people around the country are listening to their MP3 players at unbelievably high levels, with more than one in five blasting their ears with sound levels of 100 decibels or more &#8211; the equivalent of hearing a pneumatic drill 10 feet away!
