OK, so there is a million guides out there dispensing essential advice on how to toilet train your toddler. Our practical advice, hints and tips comes from mums and has been tried and tested and proven to work.<\/p>\n
1. Wait until they are ready. You may notice around the age of two and a half years that your toddler does a wiggle when they wee. This means they are aware of going to the toilet and it’s not feeling that great.<\/p>\n
2. So now is the time to buy a potty. You don’t need to buy the finest potty available to humanity but just one that will bump around on the back of the pram and stop little boys fountaining over the top.<\/p>\n
3. Talk to your child about going to the toilet, let them follow you into the bathroom \u2013 at convenience – so they learn what it is all about. If possible, spend some time with an older child who is already using the potty and get your child to join in.<\/p>\n
4. Go into a shop and pick out some big boy or big girl pants they like, perhaps with their favourite cartoon character on them. Make sure you get a pack of cheap pants as well. Sometimes it will be easier to ditch very messy pants rather than clean them.<\/p>\n
5. When you decide to start, try and stick with it. If you start and give up because it’s not working don’t get upset. Many mums do this but their child toilet trains eventually.<\/p>\n
6. Plenty of encouragement and celebrations when a few drops ends up in the potty is vital to success. Try not to introduce bribes and rewards as children can quickly learn to manipulate this and the reward should really be dry pants.<\/p>\n
7. Don’t make a big deal out of accidents. Clean them up and make sure you are asking the child if they need the potty often enough. Children will put off going to the toilet if they get too involved in a game or toy.<\/p>\n
8. Kids may wee on the potty before they poo. If they do poo in their pants remember the positives. They are successfully weeing on the potty so don’t feel disheartened. It’s a big step in your child’s life too.<\/p>\n
9. Are they not sitting on the potty at all? Get some stickers of their favourite cartoon character and get the child to customise the potty with them.<\/p>\n
10. Keep the potty in the same place so the child always knows where to find it. Remember that children will leave it to the last minute when time is of the essence.<\/p>\n
11. Remind the child about going to the toilet but don’t harrass them. They have become used to going to the toilet in a nappy so remind them they are wearing big boy or big girl pants.<\/p>\n
12. When you leave the house, remember the potty. Make sure you take a few lightweight trousers and pants for any accidents, plus a plastic bag to put wet clothes in. Clothes such as leggings that can be quickly pulled up and down are ideal.<\/p>\n
13. Go at the child’s pace and don’t rush them. Some children will be brilliant and pretty much train themselves. Others will take more time and encouragement. If you start training and fail badly, it could be that the child is just not ready. Don’t start too early and if you start and fail it is OK to leave it for a while before trying again. Children will become potty trained eventually.<\/p>\n
