{"id":6679,"date":"2010-02-01T15:48:19","date_gmt":"2010-02-01T15:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/?p=6679"},"modified":"2018-07-02T13:56:26","modified_gmt":"2018-07-02T12:56:26","slug":"mums-in-business-the-snoozeshade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/mums-in-business-the-snoozeshade\/","title":{"rendered":"Mums in Business: The SnoozeShade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A desperate parent grappling with a muslin cloth over the hood of a buggy to help a baby to take a daytime nap is a familiar sight to many of us.<\/p>\n<p>A light breeze, sunny day or gravity soon becomes the enemy for tired babies and until recently, there was no product on the market to help parents with this problem.<\/p>\n<p>Clever mother<strong> Cara Sayer<\/strong>, quickly became fed up of the blanket battle and little over a year ago decided to do something about it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snoozeshade.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6687\" title=\"snoozeshade\" src=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snoozeshade.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All by herself, Cara invented the <strong>SnoozeShade<\/strong>, a compact and convenient buggy and pram blackout blind. The fabric shade is portable and simply attaches to the pram frame with Velcro straps allowing it to be whipped on and off when needed. Don&#8217;t worry about milk stains and pigeon poo either because it can also be thrown into the washing machine on a normal wash cycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snooze1-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6684 aligncenter\" title=\"snooze1 copy\" src=\"http:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snooze1-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snooze1-copy.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chopsybaby.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/snooze1-copy-205x300.jpg 205w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The SnoozeShade in compact carry bag<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cara has now turned her back on her marketing career to become one of the UK&#8217;s growing army of Mumpreneurs. It has been a real challenge as I have continued with my normal day job of caring for my two year old daughter and then working on the business during her nap time, while she&#8217;s at nursery or after she&#8217;s gone to bed. Coincidentally, I launched the business just after she&#8217;d started nursery a couple of mornings a week and that has helped free up a few regular working hours a week. My husband, mother and friends have also been amazingly supportive looking after my daughter when I&#8217;ve been up against deadlines and giving me some thinking time.<\/p>\n<p>The one major enabler though is the internet and the technology that allows me to be able to work from home or while I am out and about at whatever time I need. Starting a business from home ten years ago would have been a much harder endeavour.\u00a0 I am loving the challenge of running my own business and couldn&#8217;t live without my iPhone now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What business advice can you offer mums who have an idea for their own baby product, but don&#8217;t know where to start?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have a good idea for a business, try and form a rough plan on how you think it will develop and be optimistic &#8211; you&#8217;ll come up against plenty of obstacles along the way but be positive and believe in what you are doing.<\/p>\n<p>Do some market research &#8211; ask friends who would buy from your planned business and ask them to ask people you don&#8217;t know for an objective perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome negative feedback &#8211; it can be very helpful in ensuring you are doing things the right way.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 2cm } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } -->Get in touch with your local business link <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesslink.gov.uk\/\">www.businesslink.gov.uk<\/a> and they will book in an appointment with an advisor who will be able to point you in the right direction to develop the idea further.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 2cm } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } -->In addition, there are plenty of online resources available for mums in a similar position &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mumsclub.co.uk\/\">www.mumsclub.co.uk<\/a> is one I have relied heavily on. It has a very friendly forum where you can put up your thoughts and questions and other mums who are also running their own businesses (some large and some smaller) will give advice, feedback and help generally.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 2cm } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } -->There are also local networking groups available in some areas &#8211; I know of one in Dorset and Hampshire that has been very beneficial to a lot of mums starting their own businesses &#8211; www.networkingmummiesdorset.co.uk<\/p>\n<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 2cm } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } -->If, like me, you have invented a product there are other things you need to consider. These include patents, registering your design and trademarks (you should also trademark your business name anyway). The Intellectual Property Office are very helpful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipo.gov.uk\/\">www.ipo.gov.uk<\/a> but the most important things when developing a product is to keep it as secret as possible until you are ready to launch. Peter Jones gives great advice about protecting your product on his website<\/p>\n<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 2cm } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } --><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peterjones.tv\/index.cfm?fuseaction=peterJones.Business_Article_Detail&amp;content_id=11\">http:\/\/www.peterjones.tv\/index.cfm?fuseaction=peterJones.Business_Article_Detail&amp;content_id=11<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 2cm } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } -->A great website specifically for female inventors is called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shesingenious.org\/\">www.shesingenious.org<\/a> it is an invaluable resource on the inventing process run by Cally Hopkins who also mentors and runs workshops on various relevant topics &#8211; there was one recently on launching a baby product for example.<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve protected your idea you can show it to people and I&#8217;d suggest exhibiting at a relevant trade show to get feedback from those in the industry. I exhibited at the Baby Products Association Show and the feedback on the product meant we went back to the drawing board to redevelop SnoozeShade to ensure it met retailers&#8217; needs. I was nervous of spending the money on exhibiting a totally new product but it was the best investment I&#8217;ve made as from there I had orders placed which gave me the confidence to continue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long did it take to get your idea into production? Was it an easy<br \/>\nprocess or did you face unexpected difficulties? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I started thinking about SnoozeShade in 2008 when Holly was smaller. I played around with ideas for names whilst starting to think more seriously about how the product would work. I went to my local fabric shop and bought various parts and started hand-sewing a few different prototypes. Then I contacted a company that I knew from my former career in marketing which manufactured products in China and made an appointment to see them with my prototype. I briefed them in and it started seriously from there.<\/p>\n<p>We went through many versions and eventually came up with a prototype which I exhibited at the Baby Products Association. We then had to address a number of issues that had been raised or that I didn&#8217;t like about the prototype and so the next few months were a whirlwind of new versions. Ideally I would have liked the product to have been made in the UK but I approached a number of companies and none of them even replied to my initial approach. It is something I would still like to investigate at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the unexpected difficulties that arose include when prototypes came back from China with parts upside down or only half sewn in and as I was working against very tight deadlines this caused a large amount of stress but it&#8217;s important to note down in detail any faults, take pictures to highlight them and be clear about how the problem should be rectified. One major benefit was that the company I use is based in the UK so they deal with China which removes the potential problem of being a small player in a big industry and also I never had to experience language or cultural<br \/>\nconfusion causing problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How important were the views and opinions of other mums about your product<br \/>\nwhilst it was in the development stages?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0 a product like SnoozeShade it was vital to get the opinion of other mums. I did this through friends and family who I asked to test various prototypes and then, when I was able, I used places like Mums Club to get objective advice and constructive feedback from people I didn&#8217;t know.
