A new 24 hour number for people to call helping them access non-emergency NHS care launched this week.<\/p>\n
The new number \u2013 111 \u2013 is initially being trialled in County Durham and Darlington with calls being handled by North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust.<\/p>\n
The aim of the new helpline is to assess callers and help them access the right service for their needs.<\/p>\n
The service is aiming to be particularly useful for patients needing medical help outside of their surgery’s hours or whilst staying away from home.<\/p>\n
All callers will be assessed immediately, with an ambulance dispatched if necessary.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: \u201cIt is essential that we improve access to, and understanding about, urgent care services, which includes out-of-hours care.\u00a0 At present, too many people are confused about who to contact and how to do so.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy putting in place one, easily memorable 111 number for all urgent inquiries to run alongside the emergency \u2018999\u2019 number we will simplify NHS services for patients.\u00a0 111 will be free to call and available 24\/7, putting patients in touch with the right NHS service, first time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Further trials are planned for other areas once the results of this pilot will decide whether to run the service through the Ambulance Trust, out of hours service provider or NHS Direct.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
