Preparing for a natural birth after having a caesarean section can be daunting and frightening for women.
When having a baby the first time around, women have no prior knowledge to base the experience on.
When it goes wrong, the thought of going through a similar experience again can lead women to avoid becoming pregnant altogether, or immediately opt for an elective caesarean section.
By understanding what went wrong the first time around and learning how to ditch any negative emotional baggage, not only can women prepare themselves for a more positive birth experience in the future, they can also go on to have a successful vaginal birth after a caesarean (VBAC).
Learning how to calm and relax the body during pregnancy and labour, as well as losing the baggage are some of the benefits offered by the VBAC Preparation CD, one in a range of Natal Hypnotherapy resources from Maggie Howell, a British clinical hypnotherapist and doula.
Maggie created the range of popular CDs after feedback she received and research accumulated having worked with individual mums and antenatal groups.
She has also successfully given birth three times using these very techniques.
The Self hypnosis CD programme for Vaginal birth after a caesarean, by Natal Hypnotherapy, comes as a two CD set.
The first CD focuses on relaxing the listener and is designed to help them lose any negative emotions retained from a previous caesarean section.
The second CD is designed to increase feelings of calm leading up to labour and to reduce and manage pain and anxiety during birth in a medical setting. It also guides women through dealing with any unexpected events during labour.
Bristol mother Sally Webber had her four-year-old daughter Keeley, by emergency caesarean section and is now pregnant with her second baby. Sally is now 22 weeks pregnant and has been testing out the Self hypnosis CD programme for Vaginal birth after a caesarean for three weeks.
Sally says: “I don’t mind admitting that I am worried about trying to give birth naturally this time around. There is just two of us in my antenatal class who are having a VBAC and I don’t really think we have had much support or even resources to help us. I’m worried about scar rupture, pain and even having another section again. It keeps me awake at night worrying.”
“I found that CD one was really relaxing. The first couple of times I dozed off whilst it was on. By listening to it lots, I found some of my tensions surrounding giving birth were starting to lift. I know it’s going to take a good while before I am totally reconciled with giving birth naturally but I am confident I will get there. Listening to it late at night helps me to get to sleep instead of lying awake worrying.”
“CD two takes a more practical approach to relaxing and dealing with preparing for birth and labour. I have listened to it with my husband too. I really want him to be my voice during labour, so I can concentrate on birthing. To do this, he needs to understand what I am doing and be able to back me up on my birth plan.
“I don’t think there is a quick fix solution to being able to come to terms with a very negative first birth. I didn’t realise quite how badly it had affected me until I was pregnant for the second time. By giving myself time alone to listen to the CDs, I am gradually getting closer to birthing naturally. I like feeling more in tune with my body and baby which the CDs help me achieve. Whether or not I will labour drug free remains to be seen, but what I do know is that as long as I go into labour naturally, I won’t feel panicked or horrified by the event.”
The Natal Hypnotherapy CD series are vital as a tool to aiding good pregnancy and labour relaxation. They come with a guide on effective birth preparation, which includes comprehensive advice on how to get the best out of the CD and the birth experience.
