As a family, we spent much of August 2017 staying in Brean. It’s probably somewhat unusual for a Bristol family to holiday so close. In fact, a lovely family also camping at Holiday Resort Unity where we stayed, thought this hysterical considering he and many of the other people staying there had travelled hundreds of miles from Wales and the Midlands.

Holiday Resort Unity – Camping with a Tent
The great thing about the campsite is that it is close to Bristol and easy to get to. It is big. Very big. It’s a huge commercial campsite with pitches for tents, caravans and a large static caravan community. There’s a large park, small supermarket, excellent chip shop, a small petting farm yard, dog walk, fishing lake, an entertainment complex – which we didn’t use, amusement arcade, bowling alley and go carts for hire.
At times it was a bit loud. That’s because people don’t seem to realise their tent walls are not soundproof. But you could pitch a tent in the middle of nowhere and somebody an hour later could appear right next to you with a fog horn voice and a 2am Cola habit. But otherwise, the site runs like clockwork from checking in onwards.
There is a toilet block on each field and each field is staffed by two wardens. The block on Brown Field had clean FREE showers for which we never had to wait for a spare cubicle because there were plenty. I think there was also somewhere to plug in a hairdryer.
We are the kind of people who would be happiest pitching a tent at one of those campsites miles away from anywhere, but we did need a bells and whistles campsite for transport purposes. I was really impressed with way the site was run, especially so considering the vast size of it. It was clean, it was cared for and I think very fairly priced for what you get.
An additional bonus to staying at Holiday Resort Unity is that you get half price entry to Brean Splash and reduced priced entry Brean Leisure Park. This is a really significant saving to on the door prices. In the summer, the price of a wristband drops in the late afternoon, meaning you can get one for £12.50 after about 5pm. This still gives you four hours of unrestricted riding until 9pm.
Brean Splash
Plenty of people travel from Bristol during the hot summer months for a day at Brean Splash. When you’re there, it’s not hard to see why. It’s a clever swimming pool broken up into different sections. There is a main 25 meter pool with the unique feature that it is all one depth. This is great for children on the cusp of being able to swim and early independent swimmers, because you don’t have to worry about them getting out of their depth. There is a baby pool for little ones and careful siblings up to four years of age. Inside the main area there are also two flumes, one of which is a fab sensory slide. It’s black with flashing lights.
The second indoor section is a large splash play area. The water is shallow and children aged 12 years and under can explore various play features, slides and splash buckets. This is an excellent feature which we all really enjoyed.
Brean has a fair reputation for being windy. It was quite overcast on the day we went which meant we didn’t spend more than 120 seconds outside in the large splash area at a time. Hardier children were happily splashing around in the large outdoor water pool and slide area as well as taking advantage of two outdoor water flumes.
During the summer, the main session of the day allows you to stay for three hours. It does get busy during peak holiday season. But it’s a really great pool and well worth the money. Remember that if you stay at Holiday Park Unity, you can get in for half price. Do check out their time table before you go and there are restrictions on the number of young children a single adult can take in at certain parts of the day.
Brean Leisure Park
Brean Leisure Park is a free to enter attraction which features lots of fairground rides, Sooty Show, food, drink and arcade. You need to check times and prices before you head off for the day because they do vary according to season. Don’t forget to get your five pound off voucher from the Check In at Holiday Resort Unity if you are staying on their campsite because it’s a big saving on entry.
Because we spent most of the day on the beach, we only visited in the evening, finding four hours plenty of time to exhaust everyone on unrestricted rides. The queues were incredibly short, in many cases non existent because the flow of people through the rides in the evening worked well.
Bear in mind that you will get soaking wet on the bumper boats and River Wild ride. As it gets later in the evening, this can make you incredibly cold.
Prices for food and hot drinks were very reasonable. In fact, the wrist bands whatever time of day you go are great value for money. Comparing it to the value and ride time you get at a place like Legoland, this is place is so much better.
The swimming pool and leisure park are a short walk from the campsite, with those staying on the resort able to take advantage of a fun train type ride in the late afternoon. In the evening, a mini bus picks people up from the various campsite fields and drops them back again.
Overall
We loved that the campsite was clean and well run. The pitches were great and the toilets and showers clean and practical. There was a bit of a difficult road to cross directly outside, but once it was traffic free, the beach was about a minute’s walk from the main entrance of the site.
Life is too short for stressing out over camping cooking and barbecues, so we grabbed hot baps from the supermarket first thing for breakfast on the beach. It was possibly the most stress free holiday we have ever been on, especially considering it was camping which can potentially go so so wrong. But we are looking forward to returning next year.
