Three in Ten Dads Regret Being Present During Childbirth

Dads Regret Being Present at Childbirth: Despite childbirth being one of the most important events in life, three in ten UK dads wished they hadn’t been present when their first born child made an appearance.

The Pampers poll found that more than half of dads wanted to be useful and supportive, but 47 per cent felt they were in the way, felt nervous or overwhelmed.

A 48 per cent said they kept doing all the wrong things, annoying their partner who was giving birth.

The poll of 1,388 mums and 612 dads also found that men spent time messing around with gas and air or taking selfies. A 21 per cent used humour to deal with difficult situations, making in appropriate jokes and one fifth opted to play with medical equipment.

The horseplay isn’t helping birthing mums, with one third stressing about their partner’s coping methods whilst they were in labour.

Senior Midwifery Practitioner, Michelle Comrie said: “I sympathise with well-meaning dads at such a stressful time in their lives where they have little control.

‘’Some of the most amusing things I have seen dads do include being fast asleep on the reclining chair during the course of their partners’ labour, passing out where they are so nervous and occasionally I have seen a few turn green.

‘’I have also come back into a room to see a dad dressed up in an apron and gloves, having taken a selfie of himself and his wife to post on social media.”

‘’But when it comes to the birthing suite it is understandable that some partners might feel out of their depth.

“Midwives are on hand primarily to offer crucial support to the women in labour, but are also there to help guide their partners through the process, as they understand bringing a child into the world is important to all parties involved.
