Woburn resident elephant only half way to giving birth after 12 months

If nine months seems just too long for pregnancy to last, then spare a thought for 17 year old Damini.

The Asian elephant, at 12 months into her pregnancy, is only just half way to giving birth.

Having resided at Woburn Safari Park since 1997, Damini’s full length pregnancy will run to 22 months with a due date of April 2012.

Head Elephant Keeper Lynne Thomson said of the news: “We are thrilled, but also aware that we have a long way to go.  Every step of the way we will be providing careful prenatal care.”

As with all females, it’s on the scales to make sure she doesn’t put on too much weight, with plenty of walking, stretching and swimming to keep her fit.

The father of the baby, Raja, also lives at Woburn.
