New app to help stay safe with electricity

A new smart phone safety app has just been launched to help stop accidents involving electricity.

Around 1,000 people are seriously injured by electrical accidents every day, usually caused by basic blunders.

Director General of the ESC, Phil Buckle says: “Electricity has become vital to our lives since the formation of the National Grid, 76 years ago. Yet even though we are using more electrical products than ever before, there is a worrying gap between the public’s perception of electrical danger and the reality, with people making simple yet potentially fatal errors that can be easily prevented.”

Research from ESC finds that people are having accidents when repairing appliances still plugged in, using faulty sockets and even ignoring burning smells.

The new ESC app will help people complete a quick visual check of a property to make sure it is electrically safe and highlight potential dangers.
