REVIEW: Chopsy Baby is reviewing… I Can Cook cook book from Lakeland

I Can Cook is a children’s cookery TV programme. Showing on Cbeebies, it is presented by Katy Ashworth and features five children in the I Can Cook Kitchen creating a recipe of the day.

The programme is aimed at the under sixes and teaches children how to connect what’s on their plate with the world around them. During the process, children are also learning simple culinary skills.

kitchenware specialist Lakeland have launched a range of official I Can Cook merchandise, to accompany the popular Cbeebies Show of the same title.

The products have been exclusively designed for Lakeland in partnership with the TV show’s producers.

As well as a selection of kitchenware pieces specifically designed for young children, the I Can Cook book published by Hamlyn, will show children in an easy and accessible way how to produce simple but tasty recipes.

The I Can Cook cook book, is a great way to get young children putting together simple meals all by themselves. The book is well designed to appeal aesthetically and also present information in a simple, uncluttered layout.

The title of each menu is large, followed by two clear lists of ingredients and equipment.

Each recipe then takes the cook through around five steps to produce the meal and shows a large image of the final dish to strive for.

What is great about this book is that it follows the format of the television programme and allows children – with supervision – the chance to create their own food.

It’s not a rushed out piece of trashy merchandise and the recipes have been given careful thought.

All of them have been created to be cooked in the oven, avoiding the use of the hob which is potentially more dangerous.

Through colours, images and photographs, the book has a warm friendly feel to it.

It makes the reader feel that creating these recipes is actually achievable.

Of course, baking like this does require quite a spacious kitchen surface, but it is possible to create crispy fish fingers with the book propped against the toaster and ingredients balanced on the fish tank.

Some of our favourite recipes include: Apple Dappy, Strawberry Meringue Ice Cream, Tomato Spirals and Olive Bread.

None of the ingredients are complicated and you won’t need an ice cream maker for the dessert recipes.

Best of all…
This is a really lovely book to get cooking in the kitchen with your child. In fact, it’s suitable for all ages.

Basically…
A great book to produce simple yet tasty recipes with your children in charge of the cooking.
