Chopsy Baby is Reviewing… Splats waterproof rain boots that actually work

Chopsy Baby Says: Brilliant for the all year round rainy UK weather

Rating: 10/10

What is it?
Splats are a brand new idea from two North London mums, who decided it was time to invent a better form of welly boot.

For young children especially, wellies are essential footwear for school. But with the 150 year old design not having been brought up-to-date, children find they don’t support their feet, let in the rain and are frequently responsible for accidents. They are certainly not ideal footwear for day-long use.

Mothers Rainbow and Amy, came together to design a new functional footwear with an ‘urban twist’.

Splats are what they have come up with. Footwear for children that is waterproof, breathable and flexible, everything that welly boots are not. The Splats have a non-slip hard sole and a form fitting insole. Instead of a gaping top, an adjustable Velcro strap and elastic keep the boot snug to the ankle and lower leg.

The boots come in five bright colours with high visibility detail.

Jen Smith with five-year-old Sidney.

The boots after three weeks of intensive wear.

Jen says: “The early years at my child’s school spend a lot of time playing and learning outdoors. They are fortunate enough to have plenty of grass and wooded area in which to explore. Being outdoors in all weathers requires something with a little more practicality that the average Clarks shoe.

The only minor issue was the lettering coming off the back. Bothered? No.

“Welly boots are the footwear equivalent of blancmanage. Yes waterproof, but responsible for various bumps on the head and wet socks every day they are worn.

“It was almost easy to dismiss word of the new Splats, assuming they were just another new gimmick to be worn once or twice then dumped at the back of the cupboard. But, having tested them through rain, ice and snow during the past three weeks, it’s hard to describe them as anything other than brilliant.

“These boots will hold up to anything. The snug fit allows a child to run around in them all day without making feet sore. Sid himself was able to run and jump and scoot as per normal.

Hard-wearing quality sole shows no sign of wear.

“Not once have the boots failed leaving Sid’s feet wet. On one morning walk to school, he went to splash in a puddle. He didn’t realise it was ice and cracked down into freezing water that came over his ankles but not the top of the boots. They didn’t let any water in at all.

“£38 for a pair of welly boots may seem rather a lot of money, but the quality of the boots is excellent. They are good to hang on to for a second child too.

“Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. It is unlikely anything less than a combine harvester could destroy them.”

Best of all…

They are practical, comfortable and really keep children’s feet dry.

Could improve…
Nothing, though at times it would have been nice to have slightly more give in the elasticated top.

Basically…
Brilliant.
