Was having children a motivating factor in working for yourself?

Completely! A very hard decision to make but it will allow me to look after my son myself and run my own business which will hopefully keep growing.

Why did you choose to set up a business in this area, or how did you come up with this product?

I have been a wedding photographer for a few years now and it seemed only natural to start doing more family photography particularly since I am a parent now to. All my friends kept asking me and the feedback has been amazing so far!

Do you manage to get a better work – life balance now you work for yourself?

Hmmmmm…sometimes, but sometimes I work well into the evening. For me its so I can spend as much time with my little boy as possible during the day. I don’t get much time in the day really as he keeps me busy. You only have this time once, and I want to enjoy every minute of it.

Did you encounter any difficulties and how did you overcome them?

There is no childcare at the weekends so my husband takes over, which is fine but we are often missing that quality time. We try and make one weekend a month totally free now.

I have little routine during the week so it is very hard to get childcare. I have had to accept that the evening is my work time. The TV has gone which is making that easier.

What is the best thing about working for yourself?

Being your own boss and making your own decisions.

And the hardest?
You have to keep very motivated!

What advice would you give to other parents thinking they may like to set up their own business?

You have to stick at it and been incredibly motivated, you can’t ever relax really. Be prepared to work very hard and you have to develop a thick skin as there are lots of knock backs but when things go well its worth every second of the hard work you put in!
