It has had a checkered past, but this summer, Sunny Delight juices are making very determined comeback.
Commercial director of Gerber Juice Company, Marnie Millard insists the drink “has had a complete redesign. It is back and it is better.”
“Parents can be confident of what their children are drinking, and rest assured that it is the good stuff,” she says.
The new lunchbox size packs of Sunny Delight Florida Style, are enhanced with Vitamins A, B1, B6 and Vitamin C. It contains 74 calories per carton and is devoid of preservatives, artificial colours and artificial sweeteners.
The ingredients are: Water , Fruit Juice from Concentrate 15% (Orange 10.1%, Mandarin 4.5%, Red Grapefruit 0.2%, Lime 0.2%) , Sugar , Acid: Citric Acid , Stabiliser: Acacia Gum , Vitamins (Vitamin C, B6, B1 and Provitamin A) , Thickener: Guar Gum , Natural Orange Flavouring .
When it comes to liquid in children’s diets, there are four schools of parental thought:
1. My child consumes nothing except water and milk.
2. My child consumes a balance but absolutely no convenience squash.
3. My child has a balance across the board.
4. My child has whatever. Am I bothered?
The new Sunny Delight cartons with their orange and lime flavour were thoroughly tested by Bristol children aged between two and six years of age.
Mother of two, Carrie Hemmings says: “I thought it was going to be dreadful, like liquid Haribo. But it’s actually OK.”
Dad of one, Joe Hawthorne says: “I remember the Sunny Delight hoo haa. I was a bit hesitant to let Jack drink this. But he has been fine. He goes crazy on OJ and apple juice but not this. I find that quite interesting.”
It was interesting to find no parents reporting back that their children hit the ceiling, no children went berserk, none grew extra limbs and none reacted adversely. As a drink, it’s a fairly pleasant refreshing flavour and fits neatly into parental school of thought three and four for lunchbox territory.
