Lower speed limits to get children outdoors Sustrans’ says
Lower speed limits on busy roads would encourage parents to get their children outdoors new research finds.
A survey of 1355 parents with children over five years old and carried out by Netmums for charity Sustrans’, found that 54 per cent of parents thought their children would be more activate with lower speed limits.
And 49 per cent said it was busy and dangerous roads which stopped their children walking or cycling in to school.
On the back of the research, Sustrans’ Free Range Kids campaign is calling for a 20mph speed limit to be a default in residential areas.
Chief Executive of Sustrans’ , Malcolm Shepherd said: “We urgently need to make our neighbourhoods safer if we’re to get kids active by walking and cycling to school and playing outdoors.
“Parents want to see safer streets – the Government must change the standard speed limit to 20mph on the streets where we live, work and play.”
