Plum of London Luxury Alpaca Clothing for Babies and Children – Review
Plum of London, create luxury alpaca clothing for babies and children, as well as scarves for adults. The designs are made with ethically sourced Royal Alpaca yarn, which is incredibly soft as well as being durable. The driving ethos behind the knitwear range is all about creating luxury and eco-friendly baby and children’s wear in contemporary designs as well as being made in Britain.
Alpaca yarn makes an obvious natural choice when it comes to clothing babies and young children.
For those that know their yarn, this knitted range does not contain lanolin and has a micron count of less than 18. The lower the micron count, the finer the fibres. A micron count of 17.7 or lower is considered the finest and 40.2 and over considered course.

Waxy lanolin can be fantastic for certain skin related issues and is freqeuently used by breastfeeding mothers. But some children or adults with sensitive skin can find they are allergic to the sheep wax also contained in most woollen products. It is also possible for clothing made with lanolin to attract mites and allergins, exacerbating eczema and other skin conditions. Babies and young children’s skin is naturally more sensitive than adults, making this lanolin yarn ideal.
From a practical point of view, alpacas themselves need their fleece to protect and insulate them in temperatures ranging from -22C in the winter to +27C in the summer. This makes it the perfect yarn to aid the skin in regulating temperature.
If the other points don’t sell the idea of alpaca yarn to you then these two ought to.
Firstly, all the knitted range is machine washable on a 30 degrees wool cycle.
And secondly, these products from Plum of London are absolutely fantastic.
It’s impossible in editorial to explain how wonderfully soft and touchable this V-neck children’s jumper is.
It has a basket weave stitch and is produced in one piece. This makes it great for children with sensory issue who cannot stand the feel of seams on their skin. It’s a close fit but not tight, with plenty of room for movement under the arms.
In fact, it’s possible to get an entire adult arm into this jumper for children aged four to five years. The fabric does not over stretch or feel restricted. It’s also very cool to the touch, something you won’t find in cheap and cheerful jumper ranges. The whole garment is an absolute joy to touch, feel and wear.
The ultimate test for clothing is the wearing and washing. With something this lovely it’s worth the minor hassle of hand washing even though it’s possible to machine wash. It’s a little too special to stick in with a bundle of George and Next.
For the wearing, this dynamic jumper will suit a smart casual event or a day at nursery. It looks good on boys in formal wear and it’s great for girls as day to day wear.
At £65, it would take a brave soul to send it worn to nursery for the day. We did this for you. It came back a little muddy with the usual mess around the cuffs and sleeves and some packed lunch down the front. But it washed exceptionally well and was dried quickly for the next day.
