Start Smart in Leicester offers practical solutions to help families with nutrition

A pilot project running in partnership with Leicester City Council, is aiming to raise awareness about healthy eating and the importance of childhood nutrition.

Start Smart, though a grassroots project, stands out with its practical and useful approach to working with harder to reach families.

The initiative will be running for one full week in Leicester, starting on March 17 2014.

During this time, more than 1,500 free breakfasts will be given to under fives at children’s centres and nurseries.

Useful ‘guided shop’ sessions will be running with a nutritionist at a local ASDA store and Leicester City Market. During this time, advice will be given on budgeting, meal planning and low-cost recipes.

Let’s Get Cooking sessions will be taking place in schools, offering demonstrations to children and their families, with Start Smart Starter Kits being given to help families cook and grow their own tomatoes.
