Bin the Booster campaign aims to get 4-7 year olds out of dangerous backless booster cushions
Getting car seats right is a tricky business for families. There are different groups and weights and designs alongside the confusion of when to forward face.
Children travelling in a car, by law, must have the appropriate seat until they are 135cm tall or around the age of 12 years.
But Britax is going one step further than ‘appropriate’ hammering home new safety campaign this summer – Bin the Booster.
Group 2-3 car seats for children aged 4-23 years of age, frequently come with detachable backs or even backless booster cushions.
But booster cushions do not offer children any side impact or head protection, despite 25 per cent of car collisions happening sideways on.
Britax only make high-back boosters with side wings and head support. The company is now urging parents and carers to stop using the backless booster cushions in a bid to keep children safe.
In 2013, Britax found that with booster cushions, seat belts were not being fitted correctly, frequently twisted and far too high.
Britax safety findings are backed by those of 2014 research by Which? which shows that 55 per cent of children aged from 4-7 years of age are using backless booster cushions.
Further to this, 22 per cent of the adults making their children use these cushions wrongly believe they offer the same protection as a high-backed booster seat.
