Cost of childcare causes parents to work for free

It wasn’t news to us and it won’t be news to you, but latest Aviva findings show the affordability of childcare makes work rather pointless.

Aviva’s bi-annual Family Finances Report, showed that one in ten families paying out childcare costs for children between birth and five years, make no money from work once nursery or childminding invoices are paid and the expenses of staying in a job are covered.

Though it also found that one in four lucky families managed to take home just under £100 a month once childcare had been paid.

A total of 2,000 families with young children under six years took part in the study.

Private nurseries and after school clubs were used by 56 per cent to cover childcare.

But the second most popular form of childcare at 35 per cent, was found to be family members.
