Pupil Premium Award Scheme Open
In one of the more bizarre competitions to launch this month, we have the Pupil Premium Awards.
Seven secondary schools and 36 primary schools from the south west have been invited to apply for the awards scheme.
Pupil Premium is worth between £935 to £1900 per child and aims to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged children and their peers. Schools receive the payment for each child eligible for free school meals and those who have left local authority care .
Education and Childcare Minister Sam Gyimah said: “I am determined to ensure all pupils can achieve their potential. Education is our biggest tool for extending opportunity, and we know many schools are doing an excellent job of boosting aspiration and tackling disadvantage. I want to thank them for all their efforts.
“I am delighted that figures show the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their classmates has fallen at both primary and secondary level – but there is still more to do. That is why I am calling on schools to ensure all their pupils can access and benefit from wider cultural activities and experiences that will help raise aspirations and build character.”
School short listed for the award will have a chance to win prizes at an award ceremony presented by Tracey Emin.
