Baby plans postponed due to recession

Baby plans are being put on the back burner by prospective parents worrying about the recession.

The current economic meltdown has left people worried about how they would manage to finance a baby, or a new addition to their current family.

Of parents polled, 16 per cent say they are holding off having kids until the economy improves, and one in six possible parents to be are delaying starting their families.

An unexpected 4 per cent decided to bring their baby plans forwards as a response to enforced absences through redundancy.

The research comes from LivingwithKids.co.uk, a family blog from save-as-you-shop service, KidStart.

Editor of LivingwithKids.co.uk, Liz Jarvis said: “Major social developments always have an impact on birth rates.  We had the baby boom in the Sixties and now we have the baby bust as the UK’s economy goes into freefall.

“It looks like the choice to hold off having kids is driven by uncertainty over jobs and family finances.  However, some couples experiencing enforced unemployment are taking the opportunity to grow their families at a time when it’s not going to impact on their career anyway.”
