Two Accessible Events Coming Up In Plymouth – Dementia Friendly Shopping and Autism Friendly Event
Plymouth is leading the way with reasonable adjustments at the moment, with two events coming up aimed at supporting those with access needs.
Plymouth’s Drake Circus shopping centre, will be holding a special Christmas shopping experience, specifically aimed at supporting people with dementia.
The centre is working with Plymouth City Council to make sure the shopping session on Monday 13 November 2017 between 9.30am and 12.30pm is a success.
Staff inside of the 70 stores will be using a more structured style of communication to help those with dementia and their carers purchase Christmas shopping.
Dementia Friendly City Co-ordinator Claire Puckey will also be at an information stand outside of Marks and Spencer from 9am until 4.30pm.

It’s also good news from the National Marine Aquarium, who will be hosting a special ‘quiet’ event on Saturday 18 November for families with sensory needs. The after hours event is aimed at people on the autistic spectrum and those with other sensory sensitivities and impairments.
Public Engagement Coordinator at the National Marine Aquarium, Helen Gowans says: “Our Quiet at the Aquarium event offers a unique opportunity for families and anyone with sensory needs to enjoy the Aquarium in a peaceful environment. Our researchers here at the Aquarium have studied the therapeutic effects of viewing an aquarium and how it can improve people’s moods, so we want everyone to be able to visit us for a fun and relaxing time.
“We’ll be keeping the Aquarium quiet as possible throughout the event, to create a serene and tranquil atmosphere so fellow visitors can focus on the beautiful marine life that surrounds them.”
