Formal Office Wear on the Decline – Good News For the Anti School Uniform Workplace Argument
Formal office wear is officially on the decline, which is great news for those arguing that overly formal and uncomfortable school uniform mimics the workplace – it no longer does.
According to research of 2000 UK office workers by Travelodge, 43 per cent think that the business suit would look ridiculous in their place of work. Seven out of ten dress casually for comfort with just one in ten opting to wear a suit.
According to 42 per cent, the tie was lost to time in the 2010s and over half of respondents believed a casual dress code was better for affordability and saved them time working on appearance.
Psychologist at Hertfordshire University, Professor Karen Pine said: “Over the last three decades, we have experienced a big movement in the workplace, where traditions and protocols have fallen enormously.
“The biggest changes have included the decline of the hierarchy, the boss being less of an authoritarian figure and more of a coach, all colleagues being called by their first name and the biggest change, the transition from a formal dress code to a casual one.”
